Job Overview: The internship position is located within the Macroeconomic, Finance and Governance Division (MFGD) of the ECA, specifically in the Development Planning Section (DPS). The intern will work under the supervision of the Section Chief and relevant officers, contributing to the Division's efforts to support African member states in achieving economic transformation and inclusive growth. The intern's role will involve research, analysis, and support for various projects related to sustainableeconomic development, governance, and poverty reduction in Africa. This is a full-time, unpaid internship lasting six months, requiring a commitment of five days per week for a total of 35 hours.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks that may include researching and analyzing topics related to sustainable economic development, development planning, governance, and poverty reduction in Africa. They will provide inputs to and edit publications, papers, and other documents, liaise with stakeholders within the MFGD, support the organization of meetings and events, assist with outreach activities, and participate in day-to-day operational tasks of the Division. This may involve responding to requests for information, developing presentations, and liaising with partner organizations. Administrative tasks may also be assigned as needed.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the internship, applicants must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second-level university degree or equivalent) or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (bachelor's level or equivalent). Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals. They should possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs. While no prior work experience is required, relevant training or education that benefits the United Nations is expected.
Educational Background: Candidates must be enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program or have completed such a program. The field of study should be closely related to the internship type. Applicants should also have good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, and MS Teams.
Experience: No prior work experience is necessary to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, relevant training, education, or advanced coursework that can contribute to the work of the United Nations during the internship is beneficial. The focus is on candidates who are currently pursuing or have recently completed their academic programs.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. A working knowledge of French is considered an advantage, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Ethiopia may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
