The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) was established in 2002 as a Political/Peacebuilding Mission, directed and supported by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer Political and Governance Reporting Officer will work under the supervision of the Political Affairs Officer/Team Leader and the Head of Field Office. The officer will be responsible for maintaining situational awareness and analysis of the political, security, social, economic, and governance situation in their area of responsibility. This includes drafting various reports, gathering and analyzing information from multiple sources, and maintaining an updated database of information management tasks. The role also involves establishing and maintaining engagement with civil society and political actors, supporting the development of outreach programs, and facilitating consensus-building among stakeholders to enhance governance and inclusion of marginalized groups.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the UN Volunteer Political and Governance Reporting Officer include:
  • Maintaining situational awareness and analysis of the political, security, social, economic, and governance situation in the area of responsibility.
  • Drafting situational and analytical reports on various developments, including daily situation reports, meeting notes, thematic reports, and background notes.
  • Gathering, selecting, and analyzing information from communications and publications received from different sources, including media.
  • Maintaining and updating information management tasks and databases for the Political Affairs Unit in the Bamyan field office.
  • Establishing and maintaining engagement with civil society, political actors, UN agencies, and international partners on mandate-related issues.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of political, governance, and community outreach programs, as well as conflict prevention and resolution initiatives.
  • Facilitating relationship-building between interlocutors and authorities to enhance sub-national governance and inclusion of vulnerable groups.
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a strong understanding of political and governance issues, as well as the ability to analyze complex situations and draft comprehensive reports. Candidates should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a variety of stakeholders. A background in political science, international relations, or a related field is essential, along with a commitment to the principles of humanitarian assistance and human rights.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a degree in political science, international relations, social sciences, or a related field. Advanced degrees are preferred but not mandatory. Relevant training or certifications in governance, conflict resolution, or humanitarian assistance will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in political analysis, governance, or related fields. Experience working in conflict or post-conflict environments, particularly in Afghanistan or similar contexts, is highly desirable. Familiarity with UN operations and mandates will be an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of local languages such as Dari or Pashto is highly desirable and will enhance the candidate's ability to engage with local communities and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is a volunteer role under the UN system, and it may involve working in challenging environments. The contract duration is typically for one year, with the possibility of extension based on performance and organizational needs.
