The African Centre for Statistics (ACS) within ECA is responsible for improving the quality and comparability of data and statistics in Africa, supporting evidence-based policymaking and planning. The ACS is divided into four sections: Economic, Infrastructure and Agriculture Statistics; Demographic and Social Statistics; Statistical Development, Data Innovation and Outreach; and Geospatial Information Management Systems. The position is situated in the Demographic and Social Statistics Section, reporting to the Chief of the Section and the Director of the ACS.

Job Overview:
The Statistician role involves organizing, designing, planning, and executing the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation, and dissemination of demographic and social data. This includes selecting appropriate data collection methods, implementing data verification techniques, and processing data for database integration. The incumbent will promote the use of data science and artificial intelligence in demographic analysis, support national statistical offices with innovative tools for data collection, and participate in developing standards for demographic concepts and classifications. The role also requires preparing technical documents for meetings, organizing seminars, and providing training and supervision to staff. The Statistician will analyze data to identify trends and provide insights through various visualization methods, contributing to data-driven decision-making and planning.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Statistician include: organizing and executing demographic and social data collection; promoting data science solutions; supporting national statistical offices; participating in methodological research; preparing technical documents and reports; organizing and participating in seminars and expert meetings; guiding and supervising staff; collecting and analyzing data to identify trends; developing statistical methods and quantitative models for demographic analyses; and performing other assigned duties as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess knowledge of demographic principles and practices, the ability to conduct independent research and analysis, and the capability to identify issues and formulate recommendations. Professionalism, teamwork, and technological awareness are essential competencies. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to gender perspectives and the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in demography, population studies, statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is advantageous.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis, and dissemination of demographic or statistical data is required. Experience in data analytics or related areas for two years or more is desirable, indicating a strong background in handling demographic data and statistical methodologies.

Languages:
Fluency in English or French is required, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of the other language is desirable, and proficiency in another official United Nations language is considered an advantage.
