Job Overview: The UN Volunteer position focuses on contributing to the planning and implementation of humanitarian and development WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) activities in Yemen. Given the dire situation where over 17.8 million people lack access to basic WASH services, the role is crucial in addressing the heightened risks of waterborne diseases and malnutrition among vulnerable populations, particularly internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities. The volunteer will work closely with UNICEF's WASH teams to ensure effective grant management, information management, documentation, and knowledge management, thereby supporting the overall goal of increasing sustainable access to WASH services in the region. This position requires a proactive approach to program development, planning, and implementation, as well as a commitment to capacity building and innovation in WASH programming.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UN Volunteer will be responsible for several key functions, including:
Programme development: Assisting in the design and planning of WASH programs that align with UNICEF's objectives and the needs of the affected populations.
Implementation: Supporting the execution of WASH activities in both humanitarian and development contexts, ensuring that they are carried out effectively and efficiently.
Grant management: Overseeing the management of grants related to WASH programming, ensuring compliance with donor requirements and effective use of resources.
Humanitarian preparedness: Contributing to the preparedness and response efforts for humanitarian WASH needs, ensuring that the organization is ready to act in emergencies.
Information management: Collecting and analyzing data for monitoring and evaluation purposes, facilitating effective learning and adaptation of WASH programs.
Knowledge management: Promoting the sharing of best practices and lessons learned within the organization and with external partners.
Capacity building: Supporting the training and development of local staff and partners to enhance their capabilities in WASH programming.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess a strong understanding of WASH programming and humanitarian principles. They should demonstrate excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Proficiency in project management and grant management is essential, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with monitoring and evaluation frameworks in the context of WASH is highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should be adaptable, resilient, and able to work in challenging environments.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in public health, environmental science, social sciences, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in WASH programming or humanitarian response would be an asset. Candidates should have a solid theoretical understanding of WASH issues and their impact on public health and community well-being.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in WASH programming, project management, or humanitarian response. Experience working in conflict-affected settings or with vulnerable populations is highly desirable. Familiarity with UNICEF's policies and procedures, as well as experience in grant management and reporting, will be advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with local communities and stakeholders. Additional languages relevant to the region may also be beneficial.
