Responsibilities The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for the position of Federal Media Advocacy Director in our national Marketing and Communications Department. The preferred location for this position is Washington, D. C. Under the supervision of the Vice President of Media Advocacy, and in collaboration with Advocacy and Marketing Communications staff, this position is responsible for developing and implementing media advocacy strategies and tactics in support of the American Heart Association’s federal advocacy priorities. Major responsibilities: Responsible for devising and implementing Media Advocacy strategies and tactics in support of the American Heart Association’s federal advocacy agenda. Works closely with the Federal Advocacy and Grassroots teams to position the Association as a leading voice of patients on priority public policy issues including access to care, tobacco control, security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food security, medical research appropriations and public health promotion. Works within the Marketing Communications department to leverage the Association’s programs and initiatives to increase awareness of our federal advocacy priorities among external audiences, Association staff and volunteers, and others. Coordinates with executive staff and senior volunteers on Media Advocacy strategies promoting our legislative and regulatory agenda before Congress and executive branch departments and agencies. Specific duties:
  • Develops and implements Media Advocacy strategies in support of advocacy campaigns in support of the Association’s federal legislative and regulatory priorities.
  • Drafts and distributes news releases, media statements, op-eds and other communications intended to generate media coverage of the Association’s federal advocacy agenda and elevate the voice of patients in national policy debates.
  • Plays a leadership role in the planning and execution of in-person and virtual media events, volunteer congressional visits, congressional briefings and special events. Serves as the Association’s primary contact with communications staff in Congress and federal departments.
  • Works closely with the Media Advocacy Manager to develop and distribute social media content that engages national media, lawmakers and policymakers, administration officials, partner organizations, grassroots advocates and others on our federal advocacy agenda.
  • Forges constructive working relationships with national policy reporters; serves as a primary media contact; manages media inquiries; leads efforts to maintain and build media lists.
  • Works directly with senior Association executives and volunteers on Media Advocacy executions including media tours, digital broadcasts, videos and other projects in support of federal advocacy priorities.
  • Represents Media Advocacy in discussions among Marketing Communications colleagues about elevating our overall media relations efforts and leveraging the Association’s existing assets and platforms to promote our advocacy work.
  • Represents the Association in coalitions and partnerships among national organizations focusing on media coverage and public awareness/education on priority federal issues.

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related field.
  • 8-12 years of professional experience in communications, public relations, politics and/or media/journalism.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of media and familiarity with effective outreach methods to reporters, particularly those covering policy.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal government operations within Congress and the executive branch.
  • Understanding of grassroots advocacy campaigns.
Preferred experience:
  • Knowledge of health policy issues.
  • Experience working with or in a non-profit organization.
  • Experience working with remote staff and teams.
