Training of Trainers (ToT) and Adaptation of the GALS Methodology
Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
UN Women is the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, established in July 2010 as part of the UN reform agenda. The organization was created to consolidate and enhance the work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system that focused on gender equality and women's empowerment. UN Women operates globally, with a mission to advocate for women's rights and gender equality, and it employs a diverse workforce committed to these goals. The organization works in various countries, including those in Central Asia, to address issues such as gender-based violence and to empower women through initiatives like the CHANGE Programme.
Job Overview:
The position involves introducing the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) model in Kazakhstan, which is a community-led empowerment methodology designed to help individuals negotiate gender relationships, improve livelihoods, and transform harmful social norms. The role requires the selected trainers to contextualize the GALS methodology for Kazakhstan, train a national cohort of core trainers and facilitators, and provide mentorship during the rollout of the program. The trainers will be responsible for adapting training materials to fit local cultural and linguistic contexts, delivering interactive workshops, and establishing a monitoring framework for the GALS implementation in Kazakhstan.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The GALS Trainers will undertake several phases of work: Phase 1 involves stakeholder consultations to understand local gender dynamics and inform training design, as well as adapting training materials to align with local contexts. Phase 2 focuses on delivering the Training of Trainers (ToT) program, which includes planning and facilitating workshops, ensuring participants achieve mastery of core GALS tools, and training in participatory facilitation techniques. Phase 3 includes providing mentorship and support for newly trained facilitators as they implement their local plans. Finally, Phase 4 involves finalizing the GALS Toolkit for Kazakhstan and submitting a comprehensive report detailing the training outcomes and recommendations for sustainability.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess expertise in the GALS methodology, experience in designing and delivering Training of Trainers (ToT) programs, and a strong understanding of gender issues, gender-based violence, and social norms. They should also demonstrate competencies in monitoring, mentorship, and sustainability orientation, as well as effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Educational Background:
A higher education degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Human Rights, Gender Studies, or related fields is required for this position. This educational background is essential to ensure that the trainers have a solid understanding of the theoretical frameworks and practical applications related to gender equality and empowerment.
Experience:
Candidates should have demonstrated hands-on experience in designing and delivering GALS training, including direct facilitation experience with the core GALS tools. Experience with the Spotlight Initiative or GALS implementation in Kyrgyzstan is highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should have experience in managing group dynamics in diverse, mixed-gender groups and training on trauma-informed, survivor-centered approaches to gender-based violence.
Languages:
Fluency in Russian is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of Kazakh would be an advantage, as the training materials will need to be adapted to the local language and cultural context.
Additional Notes:
The position is likely to be project-based with a focus on delivering specific training outcomes within a defined timeframe. The trainers will work closely with the CHANGE Programme Coordinator and will be expected to adhere to UN Women’s policies and procedures, including a commitment to diversity and inclusion. The role may involve travel within Kazakhstan for training sessions and stakeholder consultations.
