Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space. Established in 1975, ESA has grown to include 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff members. The agency's mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA operates in various domains, including Earth observation, human spaceflight, exploration, and telecommunications, and collaborates with numerous international partners to advance space science and technology.

Job Overview:
The Internal Research Fellow (PostDoc) position focuses on advancing AI technologies for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) missions. The successful candidate will work within the ESA Φ-lab, which aims to foster innovation in Earth observation through the integration of AI, machine learning, and other transformative technologies. The role involves conducting research that enhances the capabilities of onboard SAR systems, particularly in the context of cognitive cloud computing in space. The fellow will be expected to develop AI-based methods for real-time data processing, event detection, and autonomous mission planning, contributing to the evolution of next-generation Earth observation systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research and collaborate with experts across various disciplines, ultimately aiming to improve the responsiveness and autonomy of future Earth observation missions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Internal Research Fellow include: conducting advanced research in AI and machine learning for SAR data processing; developing innovative prototypes for onboard SAR systems; exploring new methodologies and technologies in cognitive SAR; contributing to the creation and curation of open datasets and tools for the research community; engaging with the innovation ecosystem to promote new techniques; publishing research findings in high-impact journals; collaborating with internal teams and external partners; supporting the Φ-lab's strategy and outreach efforts; maintaining communication with the scientific community; and assisting with the daily activities of the Φ-lab and its research network.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in relevant fields such as data science, AI, computer science, remote sensing, machine learning, electronics, or aerospace engineering. A PhD completed within the last five years, or nearing completion, is required. Applicants should demonstrate a solid understanding of SAR signal processing and algorithms, as well as experience with programming languages like Python and deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch. The ability to think creatively and explore new research avenues is essential, along with good interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

Educational Background:
A PhD in a relevant field such as data science, AI, computer science, remote sensing, machine learning, electronics, embedded systems, aerospace engineering, or Earth system science is required. The candidate's thesis should be closely related to the tasks outlined in the job description, showcasing their expertise and research capabilities in the relevant areas.

Experience:
Candidates should have a proven track record of conducting independent research, ideally with publications in reputable journals. Experience in the field of SAR signal processing and algorithms is highly desirable, as is familiarity with onboard AI and edge computing technologies. The ability to work autonomously while also collaborating effectively with a team is crucial for success in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is one of the working languages of the Agency. Knowledge of French is also required, and proficiency in another language from a Member State would be considered an asset. Candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills to facilitate collaboration in a diverse work environment.

Additional Notes:
This position is a full-time appointment within the ESA's Earth Observation Programmes Directorate, specifically at the ESRIN facility in Frascati, Italy. The application process requires candidates to submit a CV, a motivation letter, and a research proposal of no more than five pages. The deadline for applications is set for 4 November 2026 at 23:59 CET/CEST. The ESA is committed to diversity and inclusiveness, welcoming applications from all qualified candidates regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious beliefs, age, disability, or other characteristics.
