Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space. Established in 1975, ESA has grown to include 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff across various locations in Europe. The agency's mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA operates in multiple countries and collaborates with various international partners to advance space science and technology, contributing to global challenges such as climate change, disaster management, and sustainable development.

Job Overview:
The Luxembourgish National Graduate Trainee in Land Surface Temperature Monitoring (LTSM) Data Science position is designed for recent Master’s graduates who are eager to gain practical experience in the field of Earth observation and data science. The role is part of the ESA National Graduate Trainee (NGT) Programmes, which provide a unique opportunity to work on space-related projects while being funded by an individual ESA Member State. The selected candidate will engage in research and development activities focused on high spatial resolution thermal satellite missions, particularly the upcoming LSTM mission, which is set to enhance agricultural management services and contribute to environmental monitoring. The trainee will work with various datasets, including those from the International Space Station and geostationary satellites, to develop applications that address pressing environmental issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the Luxembourgish National Graduate Trainee will include selecting study locations in Europe and Africa for research purposes, analyzing the response of crops to drought conditions using land surface temperature and vegetation data, and developing models to understand lag responses to drought events. The trainee will also be tasked with calculating various drought indices, validating results with existing datasets, and utilizing ESA-supported cloud computing platforms for research activities. Collaboration with team members and stakeholders will be essential to ensure the successful integration of innovative Earth observation solutions into operational systems.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong foundation in relevant scientific or engineering disciplines, demonstrated through their academic achievements. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as the role requires collaboration in a multicultural environment. Previous experience in internships or projects related to Earth observation, agriculture, or programming will be considered advantageous. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is crucial for success in this position.

Educational Background:
Applicants should have recently completed or be in the final year of their Master’s degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, data science, engineering, or a related discipline. This educational background will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively contribute to the research and development activities at ESA.

Experience:
The position is aimed at recent graduates, so while extensive professional experience is not required, any relevant internships, project work, or extracurricular activities that demonstrate knowledge of Earth observation data and programming will be beneficial. Candidates should be prepared to showcase their understanding of the space sector and relevant activities during the selection process.

Languages:
Fluency in English or French is mandatory, as these are the working languages of the Agency. Knowledge of another language from an ESA Member State would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a diverse workplace.

Additional Notes:
This position is a National Graduate Trainee role, which typically involves a fixed-term contract. The selected candidate will be expected to work full-time at the ESA ESRIN site in Frascati, Italy. The recruitment process may include selection tests, and successful candidates will undergo basic screening before appointment. ESA is committed to diversity and inclusiveness, welcoming applications from all qualified candidates regardless of their background. The agency also provides support for individuals with disabilities during the recruitment process and in the workplace.
