Job Overview: The Associate Programme Officer will play a crucial role in the Kilimanjaro Transboundary Aquifer System (KTAS) Project, which focuses on unlocking the groundwater potential of the Kilimanjaro Water Tower. This position involves hands-on technical implementation and assurance for assigned KTAS activities. The incumbent will work under the guidance of the Chief Technical Advisor (CTA) to convert field observations, partner inputs, and technical studies into validated datasets, maps, and concise technical products that inform project decisions and reporting. The role requires a strong understanding of hydrogeological principles and the ability to apply various data collection and analysis methods to support the project's objectives of enhancing water security, climate resilience, and ecosystem health in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Programme Officer include:
Technical implementation and work-package follow-up: Prepare detailed technical task plans, field protocols, checklists, and schedules for assigned activities. Support the implementation of various data activities, ensuring consistent methods are used in both Kenya and Tanzania. Follow up on technical milestones with national counterparts and service providers, maintaining implementation records and flagging any issues to the CTA.
Field investigations, monitoring, and demonstrations: Assist in site reconnaissance, sampling, surveys, and aquifer testing. Provide technical follow-up for groundwater monitoring equipment and ensure the application of harmonized monitoring indicators.
Technical Committee and expert-process support: Prepare technical briefs and synthesize conclusions from meetings, consolidating inputs from various stakeholders.
Technical monitoring, reporting, and learning: Maintain technical indicator trackers, draft reports, and identify emerging risks and data gaps.
Capacity development and technical communication: Prepare training materials and support workshops, translating technical findings into accessible formats for diverse audiences.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Associate Programme Officer position include an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in hydrogeology, geology, water resources management, environmental science, geoinformatics, or a closely related field. Candidates should possess relevant early-career professional experience in applied hydrogeology, groundwater monitoring, or environmental fieldwork, ideally with less than two years of experience. Practical experience in collecting, analyzing, and presenting environmental or water data is essential, along with the ability to prepare clear technical records and reports.

A working knowledge of Kiswahili is desirable, as it will facilitate communication within the local context.
