Job Overview: The Project Technical Officer (PTO) will play a crucial role in the Kilimanjaro Transboundary Aquifer System (KTAS) Project, which aims to enhance water security and ecosystem health in the region. The PTO will be responsible for the technical implementation of project activities, ensuring that field observations and partner inputs are transformed into validated datasets and technical products. This position requires a hands-on approach to managing hydrogeological data and supporting the execution of various field investigations and monitoring activities. The PTO will work closely with national counterparts and service providers to ensure that project milestones are met and that all activities adhere to approved technical specifications and safety measures. The role also involves data management, GIS mapping, and the preparation of technical reports and training materials, making it essential for the PTO to possess strong analytical and communication skills.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical implementation and work-package follow-up: Prepare detailed technical task plans and support the implementation of various data activities, ensuring adherence to agreed methods. Follow up on technical milestones and maintain implementation records.
Field investigations, monitoring, and demonstrations: Assist in site reconnaissance, sampling, and other field investigations, ensuring accurate documentation of field records.
Data, GIS, and information systems: Compile and document datasets from various sources, perform analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">technical analysis, and support the functioning of the Groundwater Information Management System.
Technical Committee and expert-process support: Prepare technical briefs and synthesize conclusions from meetings, ensuring follow-up on assigned actions.
Technical monitoring, reporting, and learning: Maintain technical indicator trackers and draft sections of progress reports, identifying emerging risks and lessons learned.
Capacity development and technical communication: Prepare training materials and support technical workshops, translating findings into accessible formats for diverse audiences.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in hydrogeology, geology, water resources management, environmental science, geoinformatics, or a closely related field. They should have relevant early-career professional experience in applied hydrogeology, groundwater monitoring, or environmental fieldwork, with practical experience in data collection and analysis. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail are essential, along with the ability to communicate technical information effectively.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field such as hydrogeology, geology, water resources management, environmental science, or geoinformatics is required for this position. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of groundwater systems and the methodologies used in monitoring and data analysis.
Experience: The position is intended for candidates with less than two years of relevant professional experience. Candidates should have early-career experience in applied hydrogeology, groundwater monitoring, or environmental data management. Practical experience in collecting, checking, and analyzing environmental or water data is essential, as is the ability to prepare clear technical records and reports.
Languages: Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. A working knowledge of Kiswahili is desirable, while knowledge of French or another official UNESCO language is considered an asset.
