Job Overview:
The Human Rights Associate position is a UN Volunteer assignment that supports the implementation of the OHCHR Country Programme in Madagascar. The role focuses on integrating human rights into governance and justice processes, protecting human rights defenders, and enhancing accountability for human rights violations. The associate will work under the supervision of the OHCHR Madagascar Head of Presence and will be responsible for providing technical assistance, reporting on the human rights situation, engaging with stakeholders, and supporting advocacy efforts. The position requires a proactive approach to ensure that human rights standards are integrated into various processes and that the rights of vulnerable groups are prioritized.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Human Rights Associate will undertake a variety of tasks, including:
  • Analysis and Reporting: Collecting information on human rights issues, liaising with government and civil society actors, conducting analysis of human rights gaps, and drafting internal reports.
  • Programming: Contributing to the development of work plans, assisting in operational approaches to mainstream human rights, and monitoring progress in program implementation.
  • Training and Technical Assistance: Identifying target groups for training, contributing to the design of training programs, and developing training tools. The associate will also participate in coordination meetings and ensure follow-up on agreed actions relevant to the assignment.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Human Rights Associate position should possess strong analytical and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to engage with diverse stakeholders. A solid understanding of human rights issues and the ability to work in a multicultural environment are essential. The role requires proficiency in both English and French, as well as the ability to draft reports and documents in these languages. Candidates should also have experience in human rights advocacy and a commitment to promoting human rights standards.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required for the Human Rights Associate position. Candidates should hold a degree in law, political science, international relations, or a related field. Advanced degrees or specialized training in human rights law or international human rights mechanisms are highly desirable.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a minimum of two years of relevant experience in human rights, legal analysis, or related fields. Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, or civil society organizations in a human rights context is preferred. Familiarity with the human rights situation in Madagascar and the ability to engage with local stakeholders will be advantageous.

Languages:
Proficiency in English and French is mandatory for this position, as the associate will be required to draft reports and documents in both languages.
