The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA) was established to promote and protect human rights across 14 countries in Southern Africa. The mission of OHCHR is to ensure that the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals are upheld and respected. The organization operates in various countries including Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The office provides technical support to UN Country Teams, States, national human rights institutions, civil society, and other stakeholders. The Early Response Team (ERT) within ROSA focuses on rights-based early warning, prevention, preparedness, and response to human rights situations, monitoring developments, analyzing risks, and producing analytical products to inform decision-making.

Job Overview:
The Graphic Design Support position is integral to the Early Response Team (ERT) at the OHCHR Regional Office for Southern Africa. The role involves creating visually engaging and professional presentations of analytical products that the ERT regularly produces. These products include country and regional snapshots, thematic briefs, and fact sheets that require a clear presentation of complex information. The position expects the volunteer to develop templates and layouts that align with the OHCHR branding, ensuring a consistent visual identity across all materials. The role also involves formatting complex information for clarity and incorporating feedback to deliver publication-ready versions of the products. This position is crucial for enhancing the communication of human rights issues and ensuring that the information is accessible and engaging for various stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Graphic Design Support position include:
  • Developing templates and layouts for country/regional snapshots and thematic briefs.
  • Designing fact sheets, notes, and other products using content provided by the ERT.
  • Presenting data through various visual formats such as charts, maps, timelines, and icons.
  • Establishing a consistent visual identity that aligns with OHCHR branding guidelines.
  • Creating reusable and editable templates for future use by the ERT.
  • Formatting complex information to enhance clarity and understanding.
  • Incorporating feedback from the ERT to finalize and deliver publication-ready versions of the products.
  • Maintaining organized source files for all design work to ensure easy access and future reference.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Graphic Design Support position include proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop), strong visual communication skills, and an understanding of branding principles. The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and the ability to present complex information in a visually appealing manner.
