Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization that works to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Established in 1957, the IAEA has a mission to ensure that nuclear energy is used safely and responsibly. The organization operates in over 180 countries and employs a diverse workforce dedicated to various aspects of nuclear safety, security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, and safeguards. The IAEA's Department of Safeguards is specifically tasked with verifying that states comply with their nuclear non-proliferation commitments.

Job Overview:
The Safeguards Inspector (Radioanalyst) plays a crucial role in the analytical operations of the On-Site Laboratory (OSL) located at the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant in Japan. This position involves performing treatments and measurements on nuclear samples to support IAEA safeguards verification activities. The inspector will also be responsible for conducting analytical evaluations, ensuring quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) measures are in place, and collaborating with the OSL Nuclear Safeguards Inspector (Radioanalyst QA Manager). The role requires extensive travel, often exceeding 100 days a year, including weekends and holidays, to conduct inspections at various nuclear facilities and sites.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Safeguards Inspector (Radioanalyst) will conduct radiochemical work on nuclear material samples, including sample dissolution and chemical separation techniques. The inspector will perform measurements using various analytical instruments such as neutron coincidence counters, alpha and gamma spectrometers, and thermal ionization mass spectrometers. Responsibilities also include analyzing and evaluating analytical data, planning and coordinating on-site analytical activities, and generating regular reports. The inspector must ensure that analytical results are obtained under strict authentication measures and implement nuclear material accountancy and QA procedures. Routine maintenance of analytical equipment and participation in calibrations and quality control measurements are also part of the job. The inspector will prepare and carry out IAEA safeguards inspections and collect information for verifying operators' declarations, while being subject to health monitoring due to potential exposure to radioactive materials.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, or a closely related field. A minimum of five years of experience in a relevant analytical field is required, preferably in laboratory operations or analytical method development. Candidates should have sound knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and experience handling uranium, plutonium, and other actinides, along with a strong understanding of safety procedures. Practical experience in a nuclear laboratory, particularly with highly radioactive samples, is a significant asset. Knowledge of K-edge absorption principles, X-ray physics, and mass spectrometry techniques is also beneficial.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Bachelor's Degree from a recognized university in a relevant field such as physics, chemistry, or engineering. Advanced degrees may be advantageous but are not explicitly required. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in the principles of nuclear science and analytical techniques relevant to the role.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least five years of relevant experience in an analytical laboratory setting, with a focus on laboratory operations or analytical method development. Experience with nuclear materials and a strong understanding of safety protocols in handling radioactive substances are essential. Candidates should demonstrate a proven track record of high-quality work in analytical environments, particularly in nuclear laboratories.

Languages:
A strong command of English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at approximately US $71,335, along with a variable post adjustment and various benefits such as dependency benefits, rental subsidies, and education grants. Employees are entitled to six weeks of annual leave, home leave travel, and health insurance. The IAEA is committed to diversity and encourages applications from qualified women and candidates from developing countries. The recruitment process includes a thorough evaluation of applicants based on their qualifications and may involve assessments and interviews. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical report, and staff members may be assigned to any location as per the IAEA's rotation policy.
