Job Overview:
The position involves collaborating with IFPRI on a project focused on innovations in digital dietary data collection in Ethiopia. The consultant will support the Better Diets and Nutrition Science Program, which is working with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) and Wageningen University and Research. The primary goal is to test the effectiveness of using text messages to collect data from the Diet Quality Questionnaire (DQQ), which measures various diet quality indicators, including the Minimum Dietary Diversity among Women (MDD-W). The consultant will be responsible for organizing project meetings, writing inception reports, and developing a research agenda for the next three years. This role is crucial for understanding the biases in dietary data collection and improving methodologies for future research.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the organization of a project meeting towards the end of 2026 in Ethiopia.
  • Write the inception report detailing the use of digital dietary data collection in Ethiopia, including the proposed research agenda and steps for the next three years.
  • Analyze questions arising from the Rwanda and Guatemala datasets related to digital dietary data collection.
  • Coordinate support across project activities and partners, including IFPRI, WUR, EPHI, and telecommunications companies.
  • Ensure that the data collection methods adhere to FAIR standards and address any biases identified during the research process.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop strategies for effective communication of research findings.

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in Nutrition or a related field.
  • Demonstrated professional experience with peer-reviewed publications in similar food science experiments within the past 10 years, particularly in the last 5 years.
  • Proven experience working on dietary data collection and analysis.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A PhD in Nutrition or a closely related field is required for this position. The educational background should include extensive knowledge of dietary data collection methodologies and food science principles, as well as familiarity with research design and statistical analysis relevant to nutrition studies.

Experience:
The consultant should have a minimum of 10 years of professional experience, with at least 5 years focused on dietary data collection and analysis. Experience in conducting food science experiments and publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals is essential. The candidate should also have a strong understanding of the challenges and biases associated with dietary data collection methods.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication for the project. Knowledge of Amharic or other local languages would be advantageous but is not required.
