The Economist position is integral to this framework, working closely with the SDG Policy and Financing Section to ensure alignment with corporate priorities.
Job Overview: The Economist will provide substantive support to the Resident Coordinator and the UN Country Team in implementing the Cooperation Framework, which aligns with national reform agendas, the 2030 Agenda, and EU accession priorities. The role involves conducting evidence-based analysis of progress towards the SDGs, focusing on economic transformation, investment, and financing. The Economist will also strengthen partnerships with various stakeholders, including government entities, International Financial Institutions (IFIs), and the private sector, to promote sustainable economic development and SDG financing. This position requires a deep understanding of economic policies and the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights for the UNCT.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide substantive support for evidence-based analysis of progress towards the SDGs, focusing on economic and policy analysis to assist the Resident Coordinator and UNCT.
Develop and strengthen partnerships with UN entities, national counterparts, IFIs, and the private sector to advance SDG acceleration and financing.
Conduct integrated economic analysis for UN country-level planning processes, including the Common Country Analysis and UNSDCF.
Generate knowledge on SDG acceleration and economic transformation, ensuring a shared understanding within the UNCT.
Monitor national and global economic developments and their implications for sustainable development.
Support UNCT initiatives related to investments and financing strategies.
Contribute to the development of UN joint programmes related to economic transformation and SDG financing.
Engage with stakeholders to identify opportunities for collaboration on sustainable economic development. 1
Document lessons learned and promote knowledge-sharing within the UN system.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in economic research and analysis, with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in related fields. They should have experience in conducting economic and policy analysis, translating data into actionable recommendations, and working with diverse stakeholders. Familiarity with SDG financing, development finance, and innovative financing approaches is desirable. Candidates should also demonstrate experience in supporting strategic planning and policy development with government institutions and development partners.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Economics is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Completion of programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is an advantage.
Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant experience in economic research, macroeconomic or socioeconomic policy, and development economics is required. Candidates should have experience in translating development trends into policy options and recommendations. Experience in SDG financing and working with multiple stakeholders in support of sustainable development is also desirable.
Languages: English and Montenegrin are required for this position. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in both languages at UN Level III.
