Job Overview: The Technical Officer for Polio will play a crucial role in the global effort to eradicate poliomyelitis and improve immunization coverage. This position involves providing technical advice and support to Member States and WHO offices in developing and implementing national immunization strategies and emergency action plans. The officer will be responsible for coordinating high-quality routine and supplementary immunization activities, particularly targeting under-immunized and hard-to-reach populations. The role also includes strengthening surveillance systems for vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) and ensuring effective response strategies to outbreaks. The officer will compile and analyze epidemiological data, conduct risk assessments, and provide recommendations to improve program performance. Additionally, the position requires the development of technical guidance and capacity-building activities to enhance the skills of national and subnational staff.
Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will perform a variety of duties including: providing technical advice and implementation support for national immunization strategies; planning and coordinating immunization activities; supporting preparedness and response to polio outbreaks; strengthening surveillance systems; compiling and analyzing epidemiological data; supporting workplans and budgets; developing technical guidance and training materials; planning capacity-building activities; conducting operational research and evaluations; promoting integration of polio functions with routine immunization; liaising with WHO technical teams and partners; representing WHO in technical meetings; and performing other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, immunization, or a related field. A first university degree in medicine or health-related science is desirable. Professional training in field epidemiology, polio eradication, or immunization program management is also preferred. Candidates should have sound technical knowledge of public health and epidemiology, immunization systems, and outbreak preparedness.
Educational Background: The essential educational requirement for this position is a Master's degree in a relevant field such as public health, epidemiology, or global health. A first university degree in medicine or a health-related science is desirable, along with professional training in relevant areas such as field epidemiology or immunization program management.
Experience: Candidates should have at least seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in public health, with a minimum of four years specifically in disease eradication, immunization, or VPD surveillance. Experience in analyzing program data and translating technical guidance into practice is essential. International exposure in a multicultural environment is also required, with preference given to candidates who have worked in polio eradication or large-scale immunization programs.
Languages: Expert knowledge of English is essential for this position. Intermediate knowledge of French, Arabic, and local languages is desirable, as it may enhance communication with diverse populations and stakeholders.
