Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
  • It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and employs over 2,500 staff members, along with thousands of scientists and engineers from around the world. CERN operates in multiple countries, collaborating with various international organizations and institutions to advance the understanding of fundamental physics. The organization is renowned for its large-scale scientific instruments and experiments, including the Large Hadron Collider, which explores the fundamental structure of matter and the universe.

Job Overview:
As the ATLAS Muon LS3 Integration and Installation Manager, you will be pivotal in the preparation and execution of activities during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3), which spans from 2026 to 203
  • Your primary responsibility will be to ensure effective coordination across all ATLAS Muon sub-projects, closely monitoring daily work at P1 for Muon upgrade and maintenance projects. You will be tasked with tracking progress and taking necessary actions to keep Muon activities on schedule. This role requires close collaboration with various ATLAS Muon sub-projects, ATLAS Technical Coordination (TC), and other relevant CERN groups. You will serve as the primary interface between the Muon projects and ATLAS TC, ensuring coherent planning, efficient execution, and comprehensive reporting of all activities. The position involves significant upgrades to the ATLAS Muon detector, including the installation of new detector systems and extensive maintenance of existing components, making your role central to the planning, coordination, and monitoring of these critical activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Your duties will include ensuring effective coordination of installation and integration activities across the Muon projects, tracking progress, identifying risks, and ensuring effective communication among all participating teams. You will act as the liaison between various Muon sub-projects and ATLAS TC, providing regular status updates and comprehensive documentation. Additionally, you will develop, maintain, and monitor the integrated LS3 schedule for Muon installation, integration, and maintenance activities in close collaboration with the ATLAS TC team. You will coordinate and oversee technical activities on the ATLAS Muon detectors in the UX15 cavern, identifying, managing, and resolving interface issues, schedule conflicts, and resource constraints across multiple projects and teams. Organizing and chairing regular ATLAS Muon LS3 coordination meetings, collecting status information, and maintaining an overview of ongoing and planned activities will also be part of your responsibilities. Furthermore, you will support Muon detector teams in coordinating LS3 activities to ensure timely delivery and efficient planning, while preparing and maintaining comprehensive documentation, progress reports, and activity summaries.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Physics or a related field. Proven experience in coordinating activities for large-scale detector systems or comparable complex scientific installations is essential. You should have demonstrated experience in planning and managing work programs involving multiple teams and stakeholders, as well as coordinating complex technical projects, managing competing priorities, and resolving planning, scheduling, and resource constraints in a multidisciplinary environment. Familiarity with safety systems and safety-related technical infrastructure is also important, along with experience in installation, integration, commissioning, or maintenance activities in large scientific facilities, which is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent relevant experience in Physics or a related field. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of the scientific work being conducted at CERN and for effectively managing the technical aspects of the projects.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have substantial experience in coordinating activities for large-scale detector systems or similar complex scientific installations. This includes demonstrated experience in planning and managing work programs that involve multiple teams and stakeholders, as well as coordinating complex technical projects. The ability to manage competing priorities and resolve planning, scheduling, and resource constraints in a multidisciplinary environment is essential. Experience with safety systems and safety-related technical infrastructure is also required, along with familiarity with installation, integration, commissioning, or maintenance activities in large scientific facilities.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French. Proficiency in both languages will enhance communication and collaboration within the diverse international environment at CERN.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite. The role involves working in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations, requiring a valid driving license.
