Job Overview:
The Regional Climate and Data Analyst plays a crucial role in supporting the MERIAM initiative by acquiring, processing, and managing climate, environmental, and program data. This position is vital for producing analytical outputs and acute malnutrition forecasts that aid in early warning and anticipatory action across the Horn and East Africa region. The analyst will coordinate the gathering of data and lead the preparation and management of datasets that support MERIAM’s acute malnutrition forecasting efforts. The role requires collaboration with regional and country teams, engaging with various stakeholders, including government and academic partners, to ensure data quality and facilitate information exchange. The analyst will also be responsible for generating analytical outputs, dashboards, and forecasting products that are essential for MERIAM's modeling and anticipatory actions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Regional Climate and Data Analyst include:
  • Climate and Environmental Data Acquisition and Processing (40%): - Acquire, process, and quality-assure climate and environmental data, including rainfall, temperature, vegetation, floods, and droughts. - Generate sub-national climate and environmental indicators across MERIAM countries. - Maintain and adapt geospatial data-processing pipelines for multi-country and country-specific use. - Analyze climate and environmental anomalies relevant to nutrition outcomes. - Maintain and update climate and environmental datasets according to agreed reporting cycles.
  • Data Management, Quality and Analytical Support (40%): - Coordinate data gathering, cleaning, validation, and consolidation across MERIAM countries. - Conduct routine data quality checks and maintain harmonized, analysis-ready datasets. - Maintain organized and well-documented data repositories for modeling and analytical use. - Support the development of dashboards, data summaries, analytical reports, and forecasting products. - Ensure appropriate data confidentiality, anonymization, and data-governance practices.
  • Documentation, Coordination and Project Support (20%): - Coordinate data submissions and follow up on data availability and quality with country teams. - Maintain documentation of data sources, methodologies, workflows, and analytical processes. - Support technical coordination with country teams, regional colleagues, academic institutions, and other partners. - Support the development and dissemination of analytical briefs, knowledge products, and other MERIAM outputs. - Maintain project documentation, work plans, deliverable trackers, and reporting requirements. - Support routine project coordination, reporting, procurement, and related administrative processes.
  • Other duties as required: - Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field related to Environmental or Climate Science, Geography/GIS, Remote Sensing, Statistics, Data Science, or a closely related quantitative discipline. Additionally, candidates must have at least two (2) years of relevant experience in data analysis, environmental/geospatial data processing, or nutrition and food-security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security information systems. The role demands a strong foundation in data management and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Environmental or Climate Science, Geography/GIS, Remote Sensing, Statistics, Data Science, or a closely related quantitative discipline. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to perform the job effectively.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of experience in data analysis, climate/environmental or geospatial data processing, or related information systems. Candidates should have experience in acquiring, processing, and analyzing satellite, climate, and environmental data at a sub-national level. Familiarity with data cleaning, validation, transformation, and preparation of analysis-ready datasets is also essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position. While English is the mandatory language, proficiency in additional languages may be considered an advantage, particularly if they are relevant to the regions where Action Against Hunger operates.

Additional Notes:
This position is a full-time role with a contract duration of nine months. The Regional Climate and Data Analyst will report to the MERIAM Regional Project Coordinator based in Nairobi. The role may require working outside normal office hours or on weekends, depending on mission security and other obligations. The candidate must be prepared for potential travel to field locations, which may involve exposure to precarious settings and basic living conditions.
