Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. Founded in 1954, CERN employs thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff from over 100 countries, making it one of the largest and most prestigious research organizations in the world. Its mission is to advance knowledge in the field of particle physics, utilizing the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, and is known for its collaborative environment that fosters innovation and scientific discovery.

Job Overview:
As a Mechanical CAD Designer in the Superconducting Magnet Technology section at CERN, you will play a crucial role in the development of three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) models and detailed drawings for innovative superconducting magnets and their associated tooling. This position requires close collaboration with engineers and other technical specialists, as you will be involved in research and development projects aimed at creating future particle accelerators. Your contributions will be vital in transforming cutting-edge magnet concepts into manufacturable prototypes and practical assembly solutions, thereby directly impacting the advancement of particle physics research. You will be expected to prepare 3D CAD mechanical models and drawings of short magnet demonstrators and prototypes, ensuring that your designs meet the necessary specifications and tolerances. Additionally, you will update CAD models and drawings based on feedback from construction and assembly activities, contributing to technical discussions related to mechanical tolerances, machining methods, and assembly procedures. Your work will also involve supporting the procurement of components and assisting colleagues with tailored 3D models for computer numerical control (CNC) machining and simulations, which may include electromagnetic and mechanical analyses.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical CAD Designer include:
  • Preparing 3D CAD mechanical models and detailed drawings of short magnet demonstrators, prototypes, and associated tooling in close collaboration with colleagues.
  • Updating CAD models and drawings to integrate feedback from construction and assembly activities.
  • Contributing to technical discussions regarding mechanical tolerances, machining methods, and assembly procedures.
  • Supporting the procurement of components and updating CAD models and drawings to reflect as-built configurations.
  • Assisting colleagues with tailored 3D models for CNC machining and simulations, including electromagnetic and mechanical analyses.
  • Ensuring that all designs comply with relevant standards and specifications.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Participating in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance design processes and methodologies.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Mechanical CAD Designer position include:
  • A higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proficiency in CATIA or a similar modern 3D CAD software, with experience in producing detailed 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings for mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Familiarity with a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) database (e.g., PLM, Enovia, SmarTeam) for managing models and drawings.
  • Knowledge of mechanical assemblies and ISO-GPS dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Understanding of superconducting magnet construction and technologies is considered an asset.
  • Strong technical competencies in manufacturing methods, work preparation, assembly of mechanical structures and equipment, and mechanical measurement techniques.

Educational Background:
Candidates for the Mechanical CAD Designer position should possess a higher technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. This educational background should provide a solid foundation in mechanical design principles, CAD software proficiency, and an understanding of manufacturing processes and assembly techniques. Additional certifications or training in CAD software and mechanical engineering practices may enhance a candidate's qualifications.

Experience:
Candidates should have relevant experience in mechanical design, particularly in the use of CAD software for creating 3D models and 2D drawings. Experience with product lifecycle management systems and knowledge of mechanical assemblies and tolerancing standards are essential. Familiarity with superconducting magnet technologies and construction methods is advantageous. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of working in collaborative environments and contributing to complex engineering projects.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. Proficiency in both languages will be considered an asset, as it facilitates communication within the diverse workforce at CERN.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The job requires a valid driving license and may involve stand-by duty as required by the needs of the organization. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free, increasing in line with relevant experience, along with 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks of annual closure. Employees are covered by CERN's comprehensive health insurance scheme and have access to a pension fund, as well as family and child allowances depending on individual circumstances. A relocation package is also available, which includes installation grants, removal expenses, and travel costs.
