Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization founded in 197
  • The organization provides medical assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare. MSF operates in over 70 countries and has a workforce of more than 45,000 employees, including medical professionals, logistical experts, and administrative staff. The mission of MSF is to save lives and alleviate suffering by providing high-quality medical care to those in need, regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation. The Telemedicine Program, established in 2009, aims to enhance healthcare access by leveraging technology to connect medical teams with specialists worldwide, thereby improving patient care in remote and resource-limited settings.

Job Overview:
As an Adult POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound) Volunteer Medical Specialist, you will play a crucial role in supporting MSF’s global medical teams by providing remote medical and clinical support on a case-by-case basis. This position allows for asynchronous support, meaning you can review and respond to patient cases at your convenience, providing maximum flexibility. Your expertise in Adult POCUS will be vital in interpreting complex ultrasound scans, which are often critical in making accurate clinical decisions in settings where advanced imaging and specialist expertise are scarce. By volunteering, you will help bridge the gap in care, ensuring that frontline clinicians have access to the diagnostic support they need to improve patient outcomes in some of the world's most isolated communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Your primary responsibilities will include reviewing adult patient cases assigned to you via the Telemedicine Platform and providing timely medical or clinical advice within 24 hours. You will conduct detailed reviews and expert interpretations of ultrasound images submitted by field clinicians, assisting in clinical diagnosis. Additionally, you will help field teams narrow down complex differential diagnoses by integrating POCUS findings with available clinical data and patient history. Providing constructive feedback on image acquisition techniques and quality will also be part of your role, helping field clinicians enhance the diagnostic quality of their scans. It is essential that all advice aligns with MSF guidelines and is appropriate for low-resource settings, while ensuring adherence to strict patient data privacy standards and ethical guidelines regarding digital medical records. You will also be responsible for ongoing follow-up on assigned cases until they are resolved and collaborating with other Medical Specialists to contribute to a global community of medical knowledge.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, you must possess a university degree or higher in a medical specialty, with demonstrated proficiency in Adult POCUS acquired during residency or advanced clinical training. Formal certification through a specialty or fellowship is required. You should have a minimum of 4 years of post-qualification work experience in using POCUS in daily clinical practice, with clinical use or teaching of POCUS within the past calendar year. Being considered a POCUS 'expert' within your hospital or department is essential, along with active registration and certification with your professional regulatory body. Comfort with technology and navigating online platforms is also necessary.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in a medical specialty, with advanced training in Adult POCUS. This training should have been acquired during residency or through a fellowship program, ensuring that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide expert medical support in this area.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 4 years of post-qualification work experience, specifically in the clinical use of POCUS. This experience should include practical application in daily clinical practice, as well as teaching or mentoring others in the use of POCUS techniques within the past year. Previous experience in Global Health or work in low-resource settings is highly desirable, as it will enhance your ability to understand the challenges faced by MSF teams in the field.

Languages:
Fluency in either English (written and spoken) or French is required for this position. Additionally, fluency in multiple languages is highly desirable, as it can facilitate communication and collaboration within the diverse teams at MSF and with patients from various backgrounds.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position requiring a time commitment of 2-3 hours per week, with flexible scheduling based on your availability. The role is fully remote, allowing you to provide support from anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Successful candidates will need to sign a Volunteer Agreement that includes clauses on data privacy, non-disclosure, and medical liability. Onboarding will involve an overview of the Telemedicine Program and platform training, which is self-paced and takes approximately 1.5 hours. If requested, you should be prepared to provide three professional references, although these will only be contacted with your permission. To apply, you will need to submit a brief cover letter highlighting your relevant experience and motivation to volunteer, along with completing a screening questionnaire to help the recruitment team understand your background.
