Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The job posting organization is the European Space Agency (ESA), which was established to provide Europe with a space capability and to promote cooperation among European countries in the field of space exploration and technology. ESA operates in multiple countries across Europe and has a mission to foster the development of space technology and its applications for the benefit of European citizens. The agency employs thousands of professionals and collaborates with various international partners to advance space science and technology.

Job Overview:
The position of Internal Research Fellow (Postdoc) in Radiation Effects Engineering of Microelectronics is designed for individuals who have recently completed or are close to completing a PhD in microelectronics and radiation effects. The role is situated within the Radiation and Component Reliability Section and the Microelectronics Section of the Avionics and EEE Division at ESA. The primary focus of this position is to conduct research related to the radiation effects on complex microelectronics, which are critical for space applications. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and executing radiation test campaigns, developing test setups, and analyzing data, particularly focusing on single-event effects on semiconductor devices. This research is essential due to the increasing complexity of space missions and the need for reliable microelectronics that can withstand harsh space environments. The candidate will also engage in theoretical research complemented by practical experiments using various irradiation sources available at ESTEC, including Co-60 and heavy ion accelerators. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a collaborative environment, contributing to the advancement of space technology and ensuring the reliability of electronic components used in space missions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Internal Research Fellow include:
  • Conducting independent research on radiation effects in microelectronics, focusing on the development of best practices for radiation testing and mitigation strategies.
  • Preparing and executing radiation test campaigns for complex microelectronic devices, including field programmable gate arrays and microprocessors.
  • Developing and optimizing test setups for various irradiation sources and analyzing the resulting data to assess the performance and reliability of semiconductor components.
  • Collaborating with other sections within the division to integrate findings and support ESA projects and development programs.
  • Engaging in the publication of research findings in scientific journals and presenting results at conferences.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of laboratory practices and methodologies related to radiation testing.
  • Participating in team meetings and discussions to foster cooperation and share knowledge with colleagues.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a PhD in microelectronics and radiation effects, or be close to completion. Additionally, a master's degree or equivalent qualification in electrical/electronic engineering or solid-state physics is required. Substantial experience in radiation effects on semiconductor components and irradiation testing is essential. Familiarity with SEE rate prediction tools and knowledge of the space environment is necessary. Candidates should also demonstrate proficiency in device physics simulation tools, modern programming techniques, and software engineering practices. Good interpersonal and communication skills are crucial, as the role requires collaboration in a multicultural environment.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a recently completed PhD in microelectronics and radiation effects, ideally obtained within the last five years. A master's degree in electrical/electronic engineering or solid-state physics is also necessary, providing a solid foundation for understanding the principles of radiation effects and semiconductor technology.

Experience:
The position requires substantial experience in the field of radiation effects on semiconductor components, particularly in the context of space applications. Candidates should have hands-on experience with irradiation testing and familiarity with the methodologies used to assess the reliability of microelectronics in harsh environments. Experience with SEE rate prediction tools and knowledge of radiation hardening techniques are also important.

Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is mandatory for the position, while knowledge of another Member State language would be considered an asset. This linguistic requirement is essential for effective communication within the agency and with international partners.

Additional Notes:
The position is a full-time appointment as an Internal Research Fellow and is based in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The application process requires candidates to submit a CV, a motivation letter, and a research proposal of no more than five pages. The deadline for applications is 15 October 2026 at 23:59 CET/CEST. The ESA is committed to diversity and inclusiveness in its workforce and encourages applications from all qualified candidates, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious beliefs, age, disability, or other characteristics. Additionally, applicants must be eligible to access information and technology subject to European or US export control regulations.
