Job Overview:
The position of Secretary-General's Special Envoy on the Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan is a high-level role within the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). The Special Envoy will be responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership for the United Nations Regional Centre for the Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan (UNRCSDG). This role involves advising the Secretary-General on sustainable development matters, representing the UN at various international forums, and fostering regional cooperation to achieve the SDGs. The Special Envoy will also ensure that gender considerations are integrated into all initiatives and will work to anticipate and address emerging regional trends and risks that could impact sustainable development efforts. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Special Envoy will have a wide range of responsibilities, including: advising the Secretary-General on sustainable development issues in Central Asia and Afghanistan; representing the UN at high-level meetings and conferences; providing strategic direction for the UNRCSDG's activities; promoting regional cooperation for peace and sustainable development; ensuring gender mainstreaming in all initiatives; analyzing complex information to inform policy decisions; integrating behavioral science insights into regional policies; fostering a safe and inclusive work environment; and carrying out any additional tasks assigned by the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs. The role demands exceptional leadership, diplomatic skills, and the ability to engage with various stakeholders, including government officials and international organizations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess demonstrated leadership experience with a strategic vision and proven skills in managing complex organizations. Exceptional political and diplomatic skills are essential, along with a track record of engaging with high-level government officials and stakeholders. Candidates should have intellectual leadership capabilities, creativity, and the ability to transform organizations and lead innovative approaches to sustainable development. Experience in resource mobilization and partnership development is crucial, as is the ability to work harmoniously in multicultural teams. A strong commitment to the values of the United Nations and a good understanding of its systems and challenges are also required.

Educational Background:
A graduate degree in a relevant field such as international relations, public policy, sustainable development, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in sustainable development or related areas will be considered an asset. Candidates should have a strong academic background that supports their understanding of the complexities of sustainable development in the context of Central Asia and Afghanistan.

Experience:
Candidates should have extensive experience in leadership roles, particularly in international organizations, governmental agencies, or non-governmental organizations. A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development, policy analysis, or related fields is expected. Experience working in Central Asia or Afghanistan, or with issues relevant to these regions, will be highly regarded.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations. A working knowledge of Russian or another official UN language is considered an advantage, as it will facilitate communication and collaboration with regional stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The position is a full-time appointment at the level of Assistant Secretary-General, initially for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension based on funding availability. The Special Envoy will be based in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and will report to the Secretary-General through the Deputy Secretary-General and the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs. The role involves significant responsibilities and requires a commitment to uphold the highest standards of integrity and conduct. The costs associated with the Special Envoy's activities will be covered by voluntary contributions, and administrative support will be provided by UN DESA and UNRCSDG.
