Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
UN-Habitat Myanmar is dedicated to improving living conditions by fostering safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable human settlements. The organization operates under the People’s Process, which empowers communities to identify their needs and participate in solutions. UN-Habitat focuses on various areas including adequate housing, water and sanitation, community infrastructure, urban planning, climate adaptation, and disaster recovery. It also emphasizes strengthening local capacities, promoting better policies, and building partnerships with civil society and development partners. In 2023, UN-Habitat Myanmar launched the Myanmar Climate Action Network (M-CAN) to facilitate knowledge exchange and collective climate action, aiming to enhance climate resilience in Myanmar through advocacy and partnerships.

Job Overview:
The position of Online Volunteer for GIS mapping and data visualization is integral to the Myanmar Climate Action Campaign 202
  • Volunteers will support the use of geospatial information and digital tools to enhance the visibility of climate action initiatives across Myanmar. This role involves working with existing datasets to conduct spatial analysis and create visual representations of climate-related data. Volunteers will collaborate with UN-Habitat Myanmar to assess datasets, clean and organize data, and develop thematic maps and interactive visualizations that will be integrated into the Myanmar Climate Action digital platform. The work is designed to improve understanding and engagement with climate action efforts in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteers will undertake a variety of tasks including participating in an initial orientation, reviewing and assessing datasets provided by UN-Habitat, cleaning and standardizing data, preparing GIS layers, conducting spatial analysis, and developing thematic maps and visualizations. They will also create interactive GIS maps and dashboards using tools like QGIS and Power BI, ensuring that all outputs meet UN-Habitat's visual identity and data quality standards. Volunteers will maintain organized files, submit project deliverables, and provide user guides for future maintenance of the outputs. Regular communication with UN-Habitat coordinators and participation in virtual meetings will be essential for progress updates and coordination.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess experience in GIS mapping, data visualization, and spatial analysis. Proficiency in software such as QGIS, ArcGIS, or Microsoft Power BI is required. Volunteers should have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while coordinating with a team. Familiarity with climate action initiatives and data management practices is advantageous. Additionally, volunteers should demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to present complex information clearly.

Educational Background:
A background in geography, environmental science, data science, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have relevant academic qualifications that support their ability to perform GIS mapping and data visualization tasks effectively.

Experience:
Volunteers should have prior experience in GIS and data visualization projects, ideally within the context of climate action or environmental management. Experience working with diverse datasets and conducting spatial analysis is essential. Familiarity with remote collaboration tools and methodologies is also beneficial, given the remote nature of the assignment.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communication and documentation will be conducted in this language. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in Myanmar may be considered an asset but is not required.

Additional Notes:
The assignment is remote and expected to last for 12 weeks, with a workload of 16-20 hours per week. Volunteers will not be required to access internal UN-Habitat databases or restricted systems. All public-facing outputs will be subject to review and approval by UN-Habitat Myanmar before publication. The role is designed to be flexible, allowing volunteers to manage their time effectively while ensuring participation in scheduled coordination and handover sessions.
