Job Overview:
The position of Molecular Biologist under the ESPEN program involves significant responsibilities in the field of molecular biology, particularly related to the surveillance and control of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Africa. The incumbent will work closely with the ESPEN Team Leader and the Laboratory Head to ensure that laboratory operations align with WHO's strategic objectives. The role requires leadership in coordinating laboratory activities, developing standard operating procedures, and contributing to the generation of strategic information and knowledge products. The Molecular Biologist will also be involved in the development of WHO technical products and services, providing technical support to Member States, and facilitating capacity-building initiatives. This position is crucial for advancing the goals of the ESPEN program, which aims to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with NTDs through evidence-based and people-centered approaches.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Molecular Biologist will undertake a variety of duties, including:

• Leadership in coordination, partnership, strategic communication, and resource mobilization by supervising laboratory tests, ensuring adherence to protocols, and coordinating the development of a biological sample repository.
• Generating strategic information and knowledge products by overseeing the development and dissemination of SOPs, quality assurance systems, and reference testing protocols, as well as documenting best practices across national NTD laboratory networks.
• Contributing to the development of WHO technical products and services by discussing priority diagnostic needs and producing annual performance reports.
• Providing country technical support by analyzing assay results, contributing to decision-making processes, and facilitating training sessions for national laboratory personnel.
• Performing other related duties as assigned by the ESPEN Team Lead.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first university degree in Molecular Biology, Parasitology, Vector Biology, or related laboratory sciences. A Master's degree or PhD in relevant fields is desirable. Essential qualifications include at least 5 years of national and international experience in applied molecular biology, particularly in relation to NTD surveillance activities. Experience working with WHO and a strong publication record in the field of onchocerciasis and other NTDs are considered assets. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work effectively with diverse populations and cultures.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a first university degree in Molecular Biology, Parasitology, Vector Biology, or other related laboratory sciences. A Master's degree and a PhD in relevant fields are desirable and will enhance the candidate's qualifications for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in applied molecular biology, particularly in the context of surveillance activities for onchocerciasis and other priority NTDs in Africa. Candidates with experience working with WHO and a strong publication record in the field will be preferred. The ability to work collaboratively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is essential.

Languages:
Expert knowledge of French is mandatory for this position, while intermediate knowledge of English is desirable. The language requirements are interchangeable, meaning that proficiency in either language can be beneficial for the role.

The position offers a competitive remuneration package, with an annual base salary starting at USD 71,335, along with a variable post adjustment reflecting the cost of living in Ouagadougou.
