Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer will be integrated into the Gender and Social Norms Unit within UNFPA Ethiopia, which is responsible for leading and coordinating a diverse portfolio of programs aimed at addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful practices. This role is crucial for supporting initiatives that tackle issues such as female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, and GBV prevention and response. The position involves collaboration with national and regional government institutions, civil society organizations, and other partners to ensure effective planning, implementation, monitoring, and documentation of programs. The UN Volunteer will play a key role in advocating for gender equality and social norm transformation, contributing to the overall mission of UNFPA in Ethiopia.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The UN Volunteer will undertake a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Gender Equality and Social Norms Programme Specialist. Key responsibilities include supporting the planning and implementation of GBV and harmful practices programs, providing technical assistance to interventions focused on FGM and child marriage, and facilitating community engagement initiatives. The volunteer will also be responsible for reviewing and providing inputs to program documents, coordinating with various stakeholders, participating in technical working groups, and monitoring program implementation and results. Additionally, the volunteer will document lessons learned, contribute to reports and presentations, and support resource mobilization efforts by developing funding proposals and donor briefs.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this position should possess a strong understanding of gender issues, particularly in relation to GBV and harmful practices. They should have experience in program planning and implementation, as well as familiarity with monitoring and evaluation processes. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. The ideal candidate should demonstrate adaptability, professionalism, and a commitment to accountability and knowledge sharing.
Educational Background:
A degree in social sciences, gender studies, public health, international development, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees are preferred and may enhance the candidate's qualifications for the role. Relevant certifications or training in gender-based violence prevention and response, as well as experience in community engagement, would be advantageous.
Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in program management, particularly in areas related to gender equality, GBV, and harmful practices. Experience working with UN agencies, government institutions, or civil society organizations in Ethiopia or similar contexts is highly desirable. Familiarity with the local socio-cultural landscape and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments will be beneficial.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Ethiopia, such as Amharic, is considered an asset and may enhance communication with local stakeholders.
Additional Notes:
This position is a volunteer role based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and will primarily involve office work. The assignment may require travel for program monitoring missions and other activities outside the capital, subject to security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security considerations.
