Job Overview:
The Freelance Language Specialists position is part of the IAEA's Talent Pipeline initiative, aimed at enhancing the Agency’s roster of highly specialized language professionals. The role involves translating, revising, and editing a variety of texts, including administrative, legal, economic, scientific, and technical documents, particularly in the fields of nuclear technology, safety, and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security. The language specialists will work under the guidance of the Language Service Head and are expected to produce accurate and stylistically appropriate translations and revisions. This position is designed for freelance, home-based opportunities, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements. The engagement duration may be ongoing, and the compensation will be determined based on the type of contract, which may include short-term or paid-per-word agreements. It is important to note that registration in the Talent Pipeline does not guarantee employment with the IAEA, and candidates are encouraged to express their interest in freelance work.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Freelance Language Specialists include:

• Translating a wide range of administrative, legal, scientific, and technical texts from English into Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, or vice versa.
• Editing documents to ensure consistency in style and terminology, as well as clarity of content.
• Drafting summary records of official meetings of Policy-Making Organs (PMO).
• Researching terminology to assist in the development of the IAEA's central terminology database.
• Performing any other linguistic duties as required by the Agency.
• Ensuring that all translations are equivalent in meaning and style to the original content.
• Collaborating with other language specialists and staff to maintain high standards of language services.
• Utilizing reference materials and the IAEA terminology database, IAEAterm, to enhance the quality of translations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in languages or a related field, although degrees in other fields may also be considered if relevant. A strong command of the official United Nations languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish) is essential, along with a profound knowledge of their grammar, style, and usage. Relevant experience in translating, revising, editing, and drafting scientific and technical texts, particularly in the nuclear field or within an international organization, is highly desirable. Familiarity with Microsoft Office software and IT translation tools, especially Trados Studio and Multiterm, is required. Knowledge of the IAEA and its operations is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
A university degree in languages or a related field is required for this position. Degrees in other relevant fields may also be accepted, depending on the candidate's experience and expertise. The educational background should ideally include a strong focus on language studies, linguistics, or translation, equipping candidates with the necessary skills to perform effectively in a multilingual environment.
