Job Overview:
The GEF8-Legal Expert for Biodiversity and Nature Protection position is designed to provide expert legal advice and support to initiatives aimed at enhancing biodiversity and nature protection in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The expert will be responsible for analyzing existing legal frameworks, identifying gaps, and proposing necessary legal reforms to align with international biodiversity agreements and national policies. The role requires a deep understanding of law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">environmental law, biodiversity conservation, and the legal mechanisms that govern natural resource management. The expert will work closely with government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to ensure that legal measures are effectively implemented and contribute to the sustainable management of biodiversity. The assignment is expected to last from October 2026 to June 2027, during which the expert will engage in various activities including drafting legal documents, providing training, and facilitating stakeholder consultations.

Required Qualifications:
Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree (Master's or equivalent) in law, environmental law, or a closely related field. A specialization in biodiversity law or environmental policy is highly desirable. Additional certifications or training in biodiversity conservation or environmental management will be considered an asset.
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in legal practice, with a focus on environmental law and biodiversity issues. Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, or NGOs on biodiversity-related projects is preferred. Demonstrated ability to engage with stakeholders and facilitate discussions on legal matters is essential.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Proficiency in Bosnian, Croatian, or Serbian is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and enhance the effectiveness of the role. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region may be considered an asset.

- Collaborate with government officials and stakeholders to develop strategies for the implementation of biodiversity-related laws and policies.
- Prepare legal documents, reports, and recommendations to support biodiversity conservation efforts.
- Facilitate workshops and training sessions for stakeholders on legal aspects of biodiversity protection.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of legal measures in promoting biodiversity conservation.
- Provide ongoing legal advice and support to UNDP and its partners on biodiversity-related issues.
- Engage in public awareness campaigns to promote understanding of biodiversity laws and their importance.
Required Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in law, environmental law, or a related field.
- Extensive knowledge of biodiversity and environmental legislation at both national and international levels.
- Proven experience in legal analysis, drafting legal documents, and providing legal advice in the context of biodiversity conservation.
- Strong understanding of the legal frameworks governing natural resource management and environmental protection.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in legal research and analysis tools.
