Job Overview:
The position is situated within the Research Division (RD) of CMRE, which is tasked with identifying, developing, and delivering S&T solutions tailored to the maritime needs of the Alliance. The RD leads the scientific strategy of CMRE, leveraging capabilities in ocean sensing, numerical modeling, big data analytics, artificial intelligence, and autonomy to achieve its S&T goals. The successful candidate will be part of the Maritime Unmanned Systems Enablers (MUSE) team, contributing to the MUSE Programme of Work (PoW) by investigating the impact of Quantum Science and Technology (QST) on maritime capabilities. This role involves executing research activities, authoring scientific articles, and participating in NATO workshops and conferences, thereby playing a crucial role in advancing the understanding and application of QST in defense contexts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will support the MUSE Programme by investigating the implications of Quantum Science and Technology (QST) on Alliance capabilities, particularly in maritime scenarios. Key responsibilities include executing research activities related to Quantum optics and photonics for communications, as well as Quantum Sensing (imaging). The role also involves authoring scientific articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals and internal reports, contributing to the organization of NATO workshops and conferences, and engaging in Multi-National Projects relevant to QST. Additionally, the incumbent will collaborate with other CMRE projects, particularly those focused on Climate Change and Security, Anti-Submarine Warfare, and Data-Environmental Knowledge and Operational Effectiveness.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate expertise in QST applications within the underwater/maritime domain, particularly as they relate to security or defense sciences. Proven experience in QST experimental activities in recognized laboratories or international organizations is essential, with a focus on Quantum communications and Quantum photonics. A solid understanding of research methodologies and experimental designs is required, along with excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Strong communication abilities are necessary to present complex research findings to both technical and non-technical audiences, and a commitment to delivering high-quality results is expected. A passion for research and innovation in defense science is also crucial.
Educational Background:
Applicants must possess either an MSc degree from a nationally recognized or certified university in physics, mathematics, engineering, or a related technical field, along with at least 5 years of post-MSc experience in recognized laboratories or international institutions; or a PhD in the same fields with at least 2 years of post-PhD related experience in similar environments. This educational background is essential to ensure the candidate has the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to succeed in the role.
Experience:
The position requires a significant level of experience in the field, specifically in Quantum Science and Technology applications related to maritime security. Candidates should have a proven track record of working in recognized laboratories or international organizations, with hands-on experience in QST experimental activities. The expectation is for candidates to have developed a robust understanding of the complexities involved in maritime defense science, particularly as it pertains to Quantum technologies.
Languages:
A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages (English and French) is essential, with proficiency in both written and spoken forms. Candidates must have an English SLP (Standard Language Profile) of 3333, indicating a high level of fluency. Knowledge of the other NATO language is desirable but not mandatory, as most work at CMRE is conducted in English.

- The successful candidate will work in a world-class research facility located in La Spezia, Italy, which is supported by two specialized research vessels. Employment conditions will adhere to NATO Civilian Personnel Regulations, including a comprehensive system of allowances, supplements, and insurances. The contract is for a definite duration of three years, with the possibility of renewal based on business needs and performance. Applicants must be nationals of NATO member countries, and the recruitment process includes a security clearance and medical approval.
