Job Overview:
The UNEP Mercury Consultant position is focused on supporting the development and submission of GEF-9 concepts and project packages related to mercury management. The consultant will provide effective supervision, reporting, and closure support for assigned projects, as well as responsive technical assistance to the GCGCU’s mercury portfolio, which includes the planetGOLD programme and Minamata Convention Enabling Activities. The role requires a home-based work arrangement for a duration of six months, emphasizing the importance of timely project development and oversight. The consultant will be expected to coordinate with various stakeholders, including countries and executing agencies, to ensure the successful implementation of projects and adherence to proposal deadlines.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for a range of duties including: developing GEF-9 projects and concepts in collaboration with relevant experts and stakeholders; supporting task management and reporting for the GCGCU portfolio; conducting regular calls with Task Managers and executing agencies; reviewing and approving quarterly progress and financial reports; facilitating Project Steering Committee meetings; overseeing the planetGOLD programme; and conducting terminal evaluations of Minamata Convention enabling activities. The consultant will also be tasked with ensuring that project proposals are developed in a timely manner and that all necessary documentation is prepared and submitted as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in a field related to social or environmental sciences, such as chemistry, chemical engineering, social science, environmental studies, or environmental engineering. Alternatively, a first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. A minimum of two years of working experience in project management, particularly in an international context, is required. Additionally, candidates must have a working knowledge of GEF project development and supervision, as well as experience in implementing mercury-related projects.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in relevant fields such as social or environmental sciences. Candidates with a first-level university degree may be considered if they have additional qualifying experience. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of environmental projects and the specific challenges associated with mercury management.

Experience:
The position requires at least two years of relevant working experience in project management, with a strong emphasis on international experience. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing projects, particularly those related to environmental issues and GEF initiatives. Experience in developing and supervising GEF projects is crucial for success in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, including strong drafting and writing skills. While English is the primary language required for this position, a working knowledge of French is considered desirable and may enhance the candidate's qualifications.
