It serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment, working to encourage sustainable development through sound environmental practices. UNEP operates in multiple countries around the world, engaging with various stakeholders to address pressing environmental issues and promote sustainable practices.

Job Overview:
This internship is based in the UNEP Communication Division at the Nairobi duty station. The primary purpose of this internship is to support communications activities related to the Climate Action Pillar and other initiatives that are key to the priorities of the UNEP Communication Division. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Global Lead for Communications and Advocacy within the Climate Action Pillar. The role is designed to provide practical experience in communications within a global environmental context, allowing the intern to contribute to significant projects and initiatives that align with UNEP's mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks that support the UNEP Communication Division's objectives. These include: supporting the coordination and launch of climate publications; assisting in the outreach and distribution of key UNEP reports and campaigns to relevant audiences, partners, and networks, ensuring appropriate and timely follow-up; coordinating updates to climate-related webpages to ensure content remains accurate and current; supporting the planning and delivery of key climate-related events and campaign activations; tracking communications outputs and funded deliverables, contributing to internal, periodic, and donor reporting; preparing meeting notes for select recurring meetings and following up on agreed actions; leading selected initiatives based on their interests and skills, under supervision; liaising with UNEP’s editorial, multimedia, social media, web, and translation teams to support the timely delivery of communications products; applying design skills to support the preparation and adaptation of presentations, social media assets, and other communications materials; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent); or (c) have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. Programme. Preferred areas of study include Communication, International Affairs, or an environment-related field. No prior working experience is required, but applicants should possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. It is essential that applicants have a field of study closely related to the internship they are applying for.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. This educational background is crucial as it ensures that the intern has the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the UNEP Communication Division's projects and initiatives.

Experience:
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, applicants should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the internship. This allows interns to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting and gain valuable insights into the workings of a global organization focused on environmental issues.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the intern's ability to contribute to various projects and communications efforts.

Additional Notes:
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Therefore, costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Kenya may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
