Job Overview:
The Human Rights Associate position is integral to the Regional Office for South America (ROSA) of the OHCHR. The role involves being part of the Emergency Response Analysis Team, which is responsible for early warning analysis and risk assessment related to human rights issues. The associate will monitor human rights developments, political situations, security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, and legal matters in assigned countries. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying trends and risks, as well as contributing to the integration of human rights perspectives in UN responses to humanitarian crises. The associate will also engage with human rights defenders and relevant stakeholders to support the protection of human rights and prevent violations. The role emphasizes the importance of gender integration in all activities and requires a commitment to continuous learning and adaptability in a dynamic environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Human Rights Associate will undertake a variety of tasks, including:

• Regularly monitoring human rights, political, security, and legal developments in assigned countries, collecting, classifying, and systematizing relevant information and data.
• Reviewing and systematizing news and information from open sources related to priority human rights issues covered by the Regional Office, ensuring timely identification of relevant developments for analysis and reporting.
• Preparing concise analyses of the human rights context and situation in the countries covered, identifying key trends, risks, affected groups, institutional responses, and implications for the work of the OHCHR.
• Maintaining relevant databases and contributing to national or regional overviews and thematic reports related to human rights risks in South America.
• Supporting follow-up activities related to human rights observance through field missions and establishing links with human rights defenders and other relevant stakeholders.
• Ensuring the integration of a gender perspective in all OHCHR activities.
• Performing other related functions as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Human Rights Associate position should possess strong analytical skills, the ability to work under pressure, and a commitment to human rights principles. They should demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in their approach to work, as well as a strong sense of ethics and integrity. Effective communication skills are essential, along with proficiency in technology and data management. Teamwork and organizational skills are also critical for success in this role.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required for this position, typically including a degree in law, political science, international relations, human rights, or a related field. Advanced degrees or specialized training in human rights or humanitarian law may be advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in human rights, political analysis, or related fields. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or in a governmental context is highly desirable. Familiarity with the human rights situation in South America and previous field experience would be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in Spanish is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication in the region. Proficiency in English is also required, and knowledge of Portuguese or other languages spoken in the region would be considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
The initial contract for this position is until December 31, 2026, with potential extensions subject to funding availability, operational needs, and satisfactory performance. There is no expectation of renewal beyond this period. The UN Volunteers program promotes equal opportunities and encourages applications from qualified professionals.
