Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The CGIAR Science Program on Better Diets and Nutrition was launched in January 202
  • This program aims to enhance the consumption of sustainable and healthy diets by challenging traditional approaches that primarily focus on production, technology, and efficiency. Instead, it positions consumers as the strategic entry point for systemic change, adopting a food systems approach grounded in the High-Level Panel of Experts on security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) framework. The program addresses five key constraints that shape diet quality: accessibility, affordability, availability, desirability, and agency. It operates across the entire food system—from consumers to producers—to generate evidence on system-wide solutions that tackle these constraints. Through research, engagement, and capacity sharing, the program builds evidence for solutions that support governance and drive investments aimed at achieving sustainable healthy diets while curbing the unhealthy megatrends that harm both people and the planet. Within this program, the Area of Work on End-to-End Solutions for Increasing Intake of Perishable, Nutrient-Rich Foods (AoW3) builds on the One CGIAR Research Initiative on Fruits and Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets (FRESH). While FRESH focused on increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables, AoW3 expands this scope to include other nutrient-rich foods, specifically aquatic foods and terrestrial animal-source foods (ASF).

Job Overview:
The consultancy aims to support the AoW3's demand and food environment work by developing a brand that promotes healthy and safe nutrient-dense foods within the Better Diets and Nutrition (BDN) AoW3 in Tanzania. The consultant will identify relevant food systems actors to engage in the brand development process, review existing qualitative and quantitative data to understand dietary gaps and drivers, and develop an intervention and communication strategy aligned with BDN AoW3 interventions. The consultant will also iteratively test and trial the intervention to ensure its effectiveness and develop a plan for scaling it up. The work will be conducted remotely, with potential travel to Tanzania for up to two trips per year, and is estimated to require a level of effort of 90 days, which will be confirmed during the process.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for several key activities:
  • Identifying relevant food systems actors to engage in the development of a brand that promotes healthy and safe nutrient-dense foods within the BDN AoW3 in Tanzania.
  • Reviewing existing qualitative and quantitative data and engaging in discussions with team members to understand dietary gaps, related drivers, and other factors that could support brand development.
  • Developing the intervention (the brand) and the communication strategy for it, ensuring alignment with BDN AoW3 demand and supply interventions and the ongoing end-to-end evaluation in the same communities.
  • Iteratively testing and trialing the intervention to ensure brand effectiveness once launched.
  • Developing a comprehensive plan for scaling the intervention after its initial launch.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a PhD in nutrition, public health, or a closely related field. The consultant must have demonstrated experience as both a researcher and implementer focused on diets in Africa. Additionally, the consultant should possess expertise in the development of a brand aimed at increasing the consumption of nutrient-dense foods.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold a PhD in nutrition, public health, or a closely related field. This advanced degree is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively contribute to the project.

Experience:
The consultant should have a proven track record of experience in both research and implementation related to dietary practices in Africa. This experience is crucial for understanding the complexities of food systems and the specific challenges faced in promoting nutrient-dense foods in the region.

Languages:
While the job description does not specify mandatory languages, proficiency in English is likely essential given the international nature of the consultancy. Knowledge of local languages in Tanzania could be advantageous but is not explicitly required.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is remote, with the possibility of travel to Tanzania for up to two trips per year. The estimated level of effort for this consultancy is 90 days, which will be confirmed during the engagement process.
