Job Overview:
The Sign Language Interpreter will play a crucial role in facilitating communication between Deaf/Hard of Hearing participants and hearing participants during UN Women’s program activities and events. This position requires the consultant to provide interpretation services that are accurate, complete, and impartial, ensuring that the meaning, tone, intent, and context of discussions are conveyed without distortion. The consultant will work under the supervision of the Programme Team and will coordinate with the Operations Team to ensure effective communication during various events, including meetings, trainings, workshops, and virtual events. The role is event-based, meaning that the consultant will be engaged on an as-needed basis throughout the contract duration, allowing for flexibility in scheduling and availability.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for providing both simultaneous and consecutive interpretation as required, whether in person or via virtual platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Webex. Key responsibilities include facilitating two-way communication between Deaf/Hard of Hearing participants and hearing participants, ensuring accurate interpretation, and maintaining professional neutrality. The consultant will also conduct technical checks for virtual events to ensure audiovisual quality, internet connectivity, and appropriate lighting for visibility of signing. Additionally, the consultant will coordinate with event organizers regarding accessibility settings and ensure confidentiality of discussions and documents.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess advanced proficiency in Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO and/or SIBI) and have a strong ability to interpret accurately between spoken Bahasa Indonesia, English (where applicable), and sign language. The consultant should have excellent comprehension and expression skills, a strong understanding of Deaf culture, and knowledge of disability inclusion and accessible communication principles. A commitment to non-discrimination and inclusive engagement is essential, as well as the ability to ensure visual and communication accessibility during virtual interpretation assignments.
Educational Background:
Completion of secondary education is required for this position. However, a Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Interpretation, Communication, Linguistics, Disability Studies, Social Sciences, Education, or related fields is highly desirable and will enhance the candidate's qualifications for the role.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 6 years of professional experience providing sign language interpretation services for candidates with secondary education, or 3 years of experience for those with a bachelor’s degree. Candidates must demonstrate experience interpreting for workshops, conferences, trainings, consultations, meetings, or public events. Experience working with Deaf communities and organizations of persons with disabilities is also required, along with experience supporting accessibility services for national or international events. Additionally, candidates should have experience providing interpretation services during virtual and hybrid events, and experience supporting gender equality, human rights, disability inclusion, development, or humanitarian programmes is highly desirable.
Languages:
Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO and/or SIBI) is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in English is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to interpret in diverse settings and for various audiences.

This consultancy is event-based, meaning that the consultant will be engaged on an as-needed basis throughout the contract duration. The position is designed to be flexible, allowing for direct engagement based on need and availability.
