Job Posting Organization: The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a global humanitarian organization established in 1946, dedicated to helping people forced to flee due to conflict and crises. With a presence in around 31 countries and approximately 14,000 staff members, NRC operates with a rights-based approach, advocating for the rights of displaced individuals as outlined in national and international laws. The organization emphasizes the principles of humanity, neutrality, independence, and impartiality, and works to secure acceptance from local stakeholders for its activities. NRC Geneva specifically leads the organization's representation with the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) and UN agencies, coordinating donor engagement with both UN and Swiss donors. The organization is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, fostering a supportive culture that encourages professional growth and innovation among its employees.
Job Overview: The Humanitarian Policy and Partnerships Intern will support NRC’s global Policy and Advocacy Section (PAS) in various critical areas, including protection policy, interagency coordination, humanitarian diplomacy, and administrative efforts. The intern will engage in relationship management with diverse stakeholders, including resource and influencing partners, and will contribute to foreign policy and aid policy analysis. The role also involves supporting Geneva and global advocacy outreach, humanitarian financing policy implementation, and internal coordination. This internship is designed for students who are pursuing it as a mandatory part of their university program, and the university must be willing to sign a tri-partite agreement with NRC Geneva, confirming that the internship provides study credits. The intern will gain valuable experience in humanitarian policy and advocacy, working alongside an international team dedicated to advocating for the rights of displaced individuals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including supporting humanitarian diplomacy and partnership workstreams, assisting NRC’s engagement on humanitarian system reform, and contributing to the development and dissemination of internal resources, research, reports, training materials, and advocacy materials. Specific duties include conducting aid and foreign policy analysis, producing presentations and materials for internal and external communications, attending relevant calls and events, taking and distributing notes, and producing timely meeting minutes for NRC Geneva and PAS. The intern will also support outreach and communication efforts, organize events and workshops, and assist in preparing donor reports and tracking tools for internal and external workplan objectives. Overall, the intern will play a crucial role in supporting the organization's advocacy efforts and ensuring effective communication and coordination within the team.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Law, Communications, International Relations, or a relevant field. A strong interest in humanitarian policy or advocacy is essential, with familiarity in one or more relevant policy areas considered a significant advantage. The intern should demonstrate advanced proficiency in written and spoken English, with proficiency in French being an additional asset. Proven research, analytical, and documentation skills are required, along with strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Candidates should also exhibit self-starter qualities, teamwork capabilities, and the ability to cope with change and manage multiple tasks effectively.
Educational Background: The internship is specifically designed for students currently enrolled in a university course of study, and it must be a mandatory part of their program as per Swiss cantonal or federal legislation. The university must agree to sign a tri-partite agreement with NRC Geneva and provide an attestation confirming that the internship will grant study credits. This requirement emphasizes the educational nature of the internship and its integration into the students' academic journey.
Experience: While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in humanitarian policy and advocacy. Familiarity with relevant policy areas and previous involvement in related projects or internships would be advantageous. The internship is primarily aimed at students, so the expectation is that candidates will be gaining practical experience in the field rather than requiring extensive prior professional experience.
Languages: The primary language requirement for this position is advanced proficiency in written and spoken English. Proficiency in French is considered an advantage, as it may facilitate communication and collaboration within the international context of the organization. Knowledge of additional languages may also be beneficial, given the diverse nature of NRC's work and its global reach.
Additional Notes: This is a full-time internship position lasting for six months, with a preference for candidates who can commit to full-time hours. However, a work time arrangement of 80-90% may be considered for the right candidate. The internship is specifically targeted at students who are pursuing it as a mandatory part of their university program, and the organization emphasizes the importance of safeguarding and ethical conduct in all its operations. NRC has a zero-tolerance policy towards exploitation, abuse, and harassment, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all employees.
