Job Overview:
The selected individuals will provide interpretation services in Honduran Sign Language (LESHO) to facilitate the full and effective participation of representatives from a deaf organization in Honduras during virtual meetings organized by ONU Mujeres Bolivia. This role is crucial for ensuring that the voices of historically excluded groups, such as deaf individuals, are heard in discussions related to gender, environment, and climate change. The interpreters will work closely with the Gender, Environment, and Climate Change Specialist at ONU Mujeres Bolivia, participating in weekly virtual meetings and additional sessions as needed. The role emphasizes the importance of accessibility and inclusion in communication, ensuring that all participants can engage meaningfully in the discussions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong proficiency in both Spanish and Honduran Sign Language (LESHO). They should demonstrate excellent communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to promoting inclusivity and accessibility in all interactions. Experience in interpretation, particularly in virtual settings, is highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should be able to work collaboratively with diverse groups and maintain a professional demeanor throughout their assignments.
Educational Background:
A background in interpretation, linguistics, social sciences, or a related field is preferred. Formal training in sign language interpretation is highly advantageous, as is any relevant certification or accreditation in interpretation services. Candidates should also have a solid understanding of gender issues and the challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly in the context of environmental and climate justice.
Experience:
Candidates should have prior experience in interpretation, particularly in contexts involving marginalized groups or social justice issues. Experience working with non-profit organizations, especially those focused on gender equality or disability rights, will be considered an asset. Familiarity with the specific challenges faced by deaf individuals in accessing information and participating in discussions is crucial.
Languages:
Proficiency in Spanish is mandatory, along with fluency in Honduran Sign Language (LESHO). Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those spoken in the region, would be considered a plus but is not required.
Additional Notes:
This position is voluntary and remote, allowing for flexible engagement from anywhere. The role is part-time, with specific hours dedicated to interpretation during scheduled meetings. The selected interpreters will be expected to commit to the outlined schedule and maintain open communication with ONU Mujeres Bolivia throughout the assignment. - Provide bidirectional interpretation between Spanish and Honduran Sign Language (LESHO) during weekly virtual meetings between ONU Mujeres Bolivia and supported organizations, held every Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM (La Paz time). Interpretation duties will be shared between the two selected interpreters in approximately 30-minute blocks.
- Offer interpretation services for up to two additional virtual meetings per week between ONU Mujeres Bolivia and the deaf organization in Honduras, as requested and coordinated in advance. Each of these meetings will last a maximum of one hour.
- Conduct all interpretation assignments while adhering to principles of confidentiality, equality, diversity, inclusion, and non-discrimination.
- At the conclusion of the assignment, prepare a brief report outlining lessons learned and practical recommendations based on the experience gained, aimed at enhancing communication accessibility and facilitating the participation of deaf individuals in future virtual support spaces.
