Job Overview:
The Driver position at UNESCO involves providing reliable and safe driving services for staff, officials, and visitors. The incumbent will be responsible for determining travel itineraries, ensuring adherence to local driving regulations, and maintaining the assigned vehicle in optimal condition. This role requires a high level of judgment and decision-making, particularly in navigating difficult driving conditions and ensuring the safety of passengers. The Driver will also be expected to assist with basic administrative tasks when not driving, contributing to the overall efficiency of the office operations. The position is critical in ensuring that the organization's personnel can travel safely and efficiently, which is essential for the successful execution of UNESCO's mission in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver's primary responsibilities include:
  • Driving UNESCO staff, officials, and authorized personnel using official vehicles, ensuring safe and reliable transportation.
  • Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport and facilitating basic visa and customs formalities when required.
  • Translating in the local language for the Head/Director of the Office and/or official personnel as needed.
  • Driving on field trips and ensuring cost-effective use of the assigned vehicle through proper maintenance and daily logs.
  • Performing minor repairs and arranging for major repairs as necessary, ensuring the vehicle is in good running condition at all times.
  • Keeping track of all required documents and supplies in the vehicle, including insurance, registration, and maintenance logs.
  • Reporting accidents accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Assisting with the installation and use of communication equipment in the vehicle.
  • Delivering and collecting mail and documents as required. 1
  • Performing other office duties such as photocopying, filing, and assisting with office bills when not driving. 1
  • Undertaking the duties of other drivers during their absence.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires the following qualifications:
  • A minimum of a high school certificate.
  • A valid national driver’s license.
  • Completion of Passengers Service Vehicle driving courses from reputable institutions is an advantage.
  • Proven capacity to drive vehicles safely and in accordance with local regulations.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, in English and Kiswahili.
  • Experience in driving a variety of vehicles and knowledge of minor vehicle repairs.
  • Familiarity with UN vehicle rules and regulations is a plus.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess at least a high school certificate. Additional qualifications such as a valid national driver’s license and completion of specialized driving courses are highly desirable. These educational credentials ensure that the candidate has the foundational knowledge necessary for safe driving and vehicle maintenance.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of relevant working experience is required for this position. This experience should include a proven track record of safe driving and familiarity with local driving conditions and regulations. Candidates should also have experience in handling various types of vehicles and performing minor repairs as needed.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Kiswahili is mandatory for all applicants, both in oral and written forms. This language proficiency is essential for effective communication with staff, officials, and visitors, as well as for translating when necessary.
