Job Overview:
The Associate Education Officer will support the roll-out of Refugee Education 2030, the Refugee Education Strategy, in alignment with the Global Compact on Refugees. This role is crucial in promoting equitable and sustainable inclusion in national education systems for refugees, asylum seekers, returnees, stateless, and internally displaced persons. The Associate Education Officer will work to foster safe learning environments and enable learners to utilize their education towards sustainable futures. The incumbent will act as a focal point for education within their area of responsibility, supporting UNHCR’s education programs and strategic directions under the supervision of the Education Officer or Protection Officer. This position involves collaboration with various partners to assess educational contexts, develop implementation plans, and monitor programs to assess their impact. The Associate Education Officer will also be responsible for developing innovative educational approaches that address emerging needs in refugee education, including special needs, minorities, and non-formal education activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The UN Volunteer Associate Education Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including: staying informed about political, social, economic, and cultural developments affecting education access and quality; promoting refugee inclusion in national education systems; coordinating with partners to support education access for refugees and host communities; conducting needs assessments to inform education responses; monitoring partner performance and proposing adjustments; collaborating with Supply and Shelter colleagues to uphold construction standards; providing comments on education-related legislation; coordinating with education networks to implement the Refugee Education Strategy 2030; providing technical advice on education issues; assessing needs for services related to education; advocating for the right to education for persons of concern; participating in humanitarian and development sector working groups; and supporting the implementation of Global Refugee Forum pledges. The Associate Education Officer will also be involved in capacity-building initiatives, managing the Digital Learning Center, and contributing to a communications strategy that generates support for UNHCR’s education activities.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, integrity, teamwork, commitment to continuous learning, effective planning and organizing skills, strong communication abilities, and flexibility. They should possess a deep understanding of UNHCR operations and the ability to liaise with various stakeholders. The role requires a commitment to the principles of voluntary engagement, solidarity, and compassion, as well as adherence to UNHCR’s mission and vision.
Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is essential for this position, typically requiring a degree in education, social sciences, international relations, or a related field. Advanced degrees may be preferred, particularly for roles involving strategic planning and policy development.
Experience:
The position requires a significant level of experience in education programming, particularly in contexts involving refugees and displaced populations. Candidates should have a proven track record of working in education sectors, preferably within humanitarian or development settings, and experience in coordinating with various stakeholders, including government entities, NGOs, and community organizations.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in French is highly desirable, given the context of Chad. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the refugee populations in the area would be an asset.
