Job Overview: The Fullstack Software Engineer position at CERN involves working on the development and maintenance of various software services that are integral to the research community. The successful candidate will contribute to the SWAN interactive notebook service, Rucio data management system, REANA reproducible-workflow engine, Zenodo open repository, and CVMFS for software distribution. This role is part of the ESCAPE Collaboration, which aims to create next-generation Virtual Research Environments (VRE) that provide researchers with a modular, open-source analysis platform. The engineer will be responsible for ensuring that these services are production-ready and will play a key role in integrating them into CERN's EOSC node, thereby enhancing accessibility for federated user communities across Europe. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of CERN's analysis services and to shape a platform that will be adopted by research infrastructures beyond CERN itself. The ultimate goal is to create a seamless and reproducible analysis environment that allows researchers to discover and access data, conduct analyses, and publish results within a unified open ecosystem.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Fullstack Software Engineer will have a range of responsibilities including: developing and maintaining Jupyter extensions for Rucio, REANA, and Zenodo, ensuring these are upgraded into production-ready plugins integrated with CERN's SWAN notebook service; supporting the Competence Centre activities through workshops, training events, and documentation; gathering user feedback and translating it into technical improvements; contributing to the authentication and authorization layer, ensuring compliance with European federated-identity standards; reviewing and consolidating the unified VRE Helm charts, which includes implementing Prometheus-based monitoring and metrics collection. The engineer will also be expected to collaborate with other team members and stakeholders to ensure the successful deployment and operation of the VRE.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong foundation in software development, particularly with Python, and have experience working in a Linux environment. Familiarity with container technologies such as Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes is essential. Knowledge of version control systems, particularly Git, and CI/CD practices is also required. Additionally, candidates should have exposure to authentication and authorization technologies, such as OAuth2/OIDC, and experience contributing to or working with open-source software projects. The ability to write clear and maintainable code, as well as a willingness to learn new technologies, is crucial. Familiarity with scientific data management or workflow tools, as well as basic knowledge of web technologies and modern interfaces, is considered an asset. Exposure to high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing environments is also advantageous.
Educational Background: Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering or a related field. It is important to note that candidates without a university degree are not eligible for this position, nor are those who hold a PhD. The educational background should reflect a solid understanding of software engineering principles and practices, as well as the ability to apply these in a practical setting.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. This experience should be relevant to software engineering or a closely related field, demonstrating the candidate's ability to contribute effectively to the team and the projects at CERN.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication at CERN. Additionally, candidates should have a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for integration into the local community and workplace.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers a hybrid flexibility model. The target start date for this position is November 1, 202
