Job Overview:
The Climate and Water Systems Specialist will play a crucial role in expanding DRC Kenya’s climate-focused program portfolio, addressing the intersection of displacement, climate, and water access challenges in Kenya. This position aims to strengthen the quality, effectiveness, sustainability, and scale-up of integrated yet sector-specific interventions on climate resilience, including climate-smart agriculture, water resource management, and enhancing the adaptive capacity of vulnerable and displaced communities in arid and semi-arid lands. The role requires a strong technical grounding in climate-resilient WASH, integrated water resource management (IWRM), and the policy, legal, and financing architecture that underpins climate adaptation programming in Kenya and the region. The specialist will be responsible for ensuring that program approaches reflect climate-resilient WASH principles and will lead the application and scaling of resilience design methodologies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Climate and Water Systems Specialist include providing technical expertise to country program initiatives, leading the technical design and quality assurance of water resource management components, ensuring program approaches reflect climate-resilient WASH principles, and developing technical guidance, tools, and standards for programming. The specialist will also work on developing high-quality, competitive concept notes, proposals, and budgets, explore alternative financing sources, and support engagement with donors and private sector partners. Additionally, the role involves contributing to the development of MEAL frameworks, representing DRC Kenya in relevant technical working groups, conducting workshops and training sessions, and leading the development of knowledge products such as case studies and technical reports.
Required Qualifications:
The position requires at least 3-5 years of experience in climate-related programming and WASH, particularly in displacement and/or fragile contexts. Candidates should have strong technical experience in designing and delivering climate programming, a solid understanding of integrated water resource management, and experience in partnership development with climate and WASH-focused partners. Proven experience in proposal writing and knowledge of bidding for WASH and climate financing mechanisms are also essential. Excellent analytical, interpersonal, communication, and reporting skills are required, along with a strong network of climate and WASH partners in the region.
Educational Background:
Candidates should possess an undergraduate degree, with a preference for a relevant Master's degree in fields such as water resources management, environmental engineering, or climate change, given the technical advisory and financing scope of the role.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in climate-related programming and WASH, particularly in contexts involving displacement or fragility. Experience in designing and implementing climate programming, as well as a solid understanding of integrated water resource management and water security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security in the context of climate change, is crucial.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, while working proficiency in Swahili is preferred. Strong communication skills in both oral and written forms are essential for effective collaboration and reporting.
Additional Notes:
The position is a one-year contract with the possibility of extension, subject to funding and performance. The salary and other conditions will be in accordance with DRC’s Terms of Employment.
