Job Overview:
The Senior Specialist for Climate Health and WASH serves as the focal point for Climate Resilient WASH (CR-WASH) and Climate Sensitive Infectious Disease Prevention within the Crisis Response, Recovery and Development (CRRD) department. This role involves leading strategic projects that align with global priorities and ensuring the quality and relevance of technical standards. The Senior Specialist will oversee a global portfolio that includes WASH service continuity amidst climate shocks, water-related disease prevention, and anticipatory action. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including Global Specialists and Health Technical Advisors, to promote best practices in CRRD programming. The Senior Specialist will also engage in strategic business development and advocacy at the global level, contributing to the IRC's mission of improving health outcomes through effective WASH interventions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Specialist will lead a complex portfolio of strategic projects related to CR-WASH, water security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, and the water-energy nexus. Responsibilities include driving technical delivery of the Infectious Disease Prevention & Control (IDPC) Impact at Scale priority, providing technical support to advisors and country teams, identifying research opportunities, and collaborating with the Emergency Unit to enhance technical quality in WASH emergencies. The role also involves monitoring program implementation, collaborating on shared priorities, and supporting partner and donor engagement. Additionally, the Senior Specialist will lead the development of core indicators and technical guidance for CR-WASH, facilitate a community of practice, and contribute to the Environment & Climate Health Learning Agenda.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess established recognition as an expert in WASH, water security, or environmental management, with a minimum of 6-8 years of progressive experience in designing and leading relevant programs. A Master’s degree in public health engineering, environmental management, or a related field is required, along with demonstrated experience in developing strategies to achieve ambitious goals. Strong collaboration skills across health, nutrition, and climate resilience domains are essential, as well as the ability to use data for programmatic decisions. Candidates should also have a proven track record of driving evidence-based practices and the ability to design technical approaches for proposals.
Educational Background:
A Master’s degree in public health engineering, environmental management, or a closely related field is required. Equivalent professional experience may also be considered. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in the principles of public health, environmental management, and WASH systems.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 6-8 years of progressive experience in the field of WASH, particularly in contexts affected by climate change and humanitarian crises. Candidates should have experience in designing and leading programs that address Climate Resilient WASH and demonstrate a strong ability to connect infrastructure development with service models and policy strengthening.
Languages:
Proficiency in English and French is mandatory, while knowledge of Spanish or Arabic is considered an asset. The ability to communicate effectively in multiple languages will enhance collaboration with diverse stakeholders and facilitate the dissemination of technical guidance and best practices.
Additional Notes:
The compensation for this position ranges from $104K to $120K in the US and GBP 58,476 to GBP 69,440 in the UK, depending on various factors such as labor market conditions, job type, and individual candidate experience. The role may require global travel up to 30% of the time, occasionally on short notice.
