Job Overview:
The position of Individual Consultant Livelihoods and Community Resilience Expert is focused on restoring the ecosystem integrity of the degraded Bobirwa-Tswapong ecosystem in Botswana. The consultant will be tasked with developing strategies to sustain local livelihoods while effectively addressing challenges such as climate change, human-wildlife conflict, and biodiversity management. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of community resilience and sustainable practices, as well as the ability to engage with local stakeholders to implement effective solutions. The assignment is expected to last for 8 weeks within a 4-month period, during which the consultant will work closely with UNDP and local communities to achieve the project objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for conducting assessments of the current ecosystem conditions and identifying key areas for restoration. They will develop a detailed action plan that outlines specific interventions needed to restore ecosystem integrity and enhance community resilience. The consultant will also facilitate workshops and meetings with local stakeholders to gather input and foster collaboration. Additionally, they will monitor and evaluate the progress of the restoration efforts, providing regular updates and reports to UNDP. The consultant must ensure that all activities align with UNDP's guidelines and the specific requirements of the GEF-8 PPG project.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in environmental science, ecology, or a related field. They should have proven experience in ecosystem restoration, community engagement, and project management. Familiarity with climate change adaptation strategies and biodiversity conservation is essential. The consultant should also demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in diverse cultural settings. A strong understanding of the socio-economic context of Botswana and previous experience working with local communities will be highly advantageous.
Educational Background:
A minimum of a Master's degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Sustainable Development, or a related discipline is required. Candidates with a PhD in a relevant field will be given preference. Additional certifications in project management or community development will be considered an asset.
Experience:
The position requires at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in ecosystem restoration, community resilience, or related fields. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of UNDP projects, is highly desirable. The consultant should have a track record of successfully managing similar projects and delivering measurable outcomes.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communications and documentation will be conducted in this language. Knowledge of Setswana or other local languages will be considered a significant advantage, as it will facilitate better engagement with local communities.
Additional Notes:
This position is classified as an individual contractor role, and the contract duration is for 8 weeks within a total of 4 months. The consultant will be expected to work full-time during this period. The position is open to both national and international candidates, and compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
