Job Overview:
The Conservation Director at WWF Caucasus Programme Office (WWF CauPO) plays a pivotal role in setting strategic conservation and policy directions for the South Caucasus region, which includes Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. This position involves overseeing the implementation of conservation strategies and initiatives, ensuring that they align with both regional and global WWF priorities. The Conservation Director will lead a team of conservation managers, engage with partners and stakeholders, and drive fundraising efforts to support conservation programs. The role requires a strong focus on monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) to assess the impact of conservation actions and adapt strategies accordingly. The Conservation Director will also be responsible for fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including local communities, governments, and NGOs, to ensure that conservation efforts are effective and sustainable.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Conservation Director will have a range of responsibilities, including:
  • Strategic Conservation Leadership: Serving on the Regional Management Team (RMT) and contributing to the development of region-wide policies and standards. Leading strategic conservation planning processes and ensuring alignment with WWF CauPO objectives. Overseeing the implementation of the WWF CauPO conservation strategy and associated policies.
  • ESSF, Quality Assurance, and Risk Management: Developing and maintaining quality assurance systems to ensure programmatic integrity. Supervising the implementation of Environmental & Social Safeguards (ESSF) across projects. Identifying and mitigating programmatic risks.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL): Designing and overseeing MEL strategies that align with organizational goals. Leading the development of logframes and KPIs for tracking conservation impact. Building MEL capacity across the region.
  • Team Management and Talent Development: Supervising and mentoring conservation staff, supporting their professional development. Collaborating on workforce planning and recruitment.
  • Communications, Partnerships & Representation: Acting as a spokesperson for the WWF CauPO Conservation Programme and representing the organization in regional and global forums. Contributing to communications products that promote WWF CauPO's impact.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or higher in natural resources management, environmental or conservation management, development studies, or related fields. A minimum of 10 years of practical experience in leading and managing integrated conservation programs at a regional level is required. Candidates should demonstrate experience in developing, implementing, and monitoring strategic plans, as well as a thorough understanding of conservation and development issues in the South Caucasus region. Knowledge of the policy and institutional context related to conservation in the region is essential, along with experience in developing project proposals for various funding sources. Strong oral and written communication skills in English, Russian, and Georgian are mandatory.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Master’s degree or higher in relevant fields such as natural resources management, environmental or conservation management, or development studies. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of conservation issues and for effectively leading conservation initiatives.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 10 years of practical experience in leading and managing integrated conservation programs at a regional level. This experience should include a proven track record in developing and implementing strategic plans, as well as monitoring and evaluating conservation efforts. Familiarity with the conservation landscape in the South Caucasus region is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, along with proficiency in Russian and Georgian. Strong communication skills in these languages are essential for effective collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including local communities, government institutions, and international partners.
