Job Overview:
The Water and Sanitation Specialist position is crucial for ensuring that MSF's medical facilities and programs have access to safe water and adequate sanitation. The specialist will be responsible for assessing water supply and sanitation needs in various contexts, designing and implementing water and sanitation projects, and ensuring compliance with MSF's standards and protocols. This role requires a strong understanding of water management, hygiene promotion, and environmental health. The specialist will work closely with medical teams to integrate water and sanitation interventions into health programs, ensuring that the health and safety of patients and staff are prioritized. The position may involve travel to field locations, where the specialist will conduct assessments, provide training to local staff, and oversee the implementation of projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct assessments of water supply and sanitation needs in MSF project locations.
  • Design and implement water and sanitation projects, including water treatment, distribution systems, and sanitation facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with MSF's water and sanitation protocols and international standards.
  • Collaborate with medical teams to integrate water and sanitation interventions into health programs.
  • Provide training and support to local staff on water management and hygiene practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of water and sanitation interventions.
  • Prepare reports and documentation related to water and sanitation activities.
  • Participate in coordination meetings with other humanitarian actors and stakeholders.
  • Ensure the proper maintenance of water and sanitation equipment and facilities. 1
  • Advocate for the importance of water and sanitation in public health initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in water and sanitation engineering or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of water management, hygiene promotion, and environmental health.
  • Ability to work in challenging environments and under pressure.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and adaptability.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, public health, or a related field is required. Additional certifications in water and sanitation management or humanitarian response are advantageous.

Experience:
A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in water and sanitation projects, preferably in humanitarian or emergency settings. Experience working with international organizations or NGOs is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in French is mandatory, and proficiency in English is a plus. Knowledge of local languages spoken in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is an advantage.

This position is full-time and may require travel to remote locations. The contract duration is typically for a fixed term, with the possibility of extension based on project needs.
