Job Overview:
The UNESCO Project Communication Assistant will play a crucial role in enhancing the visibility and communication of two significant projects aimed at addressing climate change impacts in Central Asia. The incumbent will work under the overall authority of the Director of the UNESCO Almaty Office and will be supervised by the GEF-UNDP-UNESCO Cryosphere Project Manager and the GLOFCA Project Officer. The primary focus will be on executing communication strategies that promote effective engagement with both internal and external audiences, ensuring compliance with UNESCO's communication guidelines as well as the requirements set forth by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Adaptation Fund (AF). The role involves designing promotional materials, managing social media content, and maintaining project websites, all while collaborating closely with project managers and implementation teams across multiple countries in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the UNESCO Project Communication Assistant include:
  • Executing communication strategies for the GLOFCA and GEF-UNDP-UNESCO Cryosphere projects, ensuring effective communication with stakeholders.
  • Designing and reviewing Terms of Reference for project promotion and visibility, assisting in contract preparation and evaluation.
  • Identifying media partners and developing a mailing list for media coverage of project activities.
  • Overseeing the publication of newsletters in collaboration with project teams and national coordinators across Central Asia.
  • Maintaining and updating project websites with relevant content, including news items and human stories.
  • Proposing and implementing a social media strategy, including content creation for various platforms.
  • Developing and editing short videos related to project topics, including interviews and field footage.
  • Overseeing graphic design for promotional materials and coordinating knowledge management for project outputs.

  • Performing any additional tasks as required to support the successful execution of project communications.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a completed higher education degree in mass communication, media studies, journalism, or a related field with a specialization in information and communication technology. Additionally, candidates should have at least two years of relevant professional experience in communication, public advocacy, marketing, PR, website development, or social media management. Strong negotiation, networking, organizational, and coordination skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural team environment. Proficiency in ICT tools, including MS Office, graphic design software, and video editing software, is also required.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a higher education degree in mass communication, media studies, journalism, or a related field that focuses on information and communication technology. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of communication strategies and the media landscape relevant to the projects.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in communication and information fields. This experience should encompass public advocacy, marketing, PR, website development, and social media management. Candidates should demonstrate a proven track record of effective communication and stakeholder engagement, particularly in contexts related to environmental issues or natural sciences.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Russian, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Excellent communication skills in these languages are essential for engaging with diverse stakeholders and producing high-quality communication materials. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the Central Asian region would be considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration is initially for 12 months, with a probation period of three months. The position is open to external candidates, and the salary is set at a base monthly gross of USD 1,312.16, which is subject to local UN salary scales. Additional benefits include medical and pension coverage, with contributions made by UNESCO upon proof of enrollment in a local pension or medical scheme. The position is full-time, and candidates must comply with local tax laws.
