Job Overview:
The Information and Data Management Associate position is crucial for supporting UNHCR's protection mandate and the coordination functions of the inter-agency Protection Working Group (PWG) and Gender Theme Group (GTG). This role combines information management, data analysis, reporting, and systems support with inter-agency coordination, enabling evidence-based planning and decision-making that enhances protection outcomes for vulnerable populations. The position is hosted within the UNHCR South Africa Country Office, where the National UN Volunteer will manage operational information, population data, and reporting systems while facilitating coordination among UN agencies, government counterparts, and implementing partners. The volunteer will also prepare analytical products, information-sharing mechanisms, meeting documentation, and monitor joint work plans for the PWG and GTG. This role offers a unique opportunity for a young professional to gain practical experience in humanitarian protection, information management, digital systems, inter-agency coordination, and knowledge management within the United Nations system. Through structured mentoring, coaching, and workplace learning, the volunteer will develop technical and professional competencies while contributing to more effective protection programming and coordinated UN action.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Information and Data Management Associate include:
  • Supporting programme coordination and implementation by assisting with information and data management processes that enhance programme planning, coordination, and service delivery.
  • Coordinating data collection activities, maintaining operational information systems, and supporting programme teams in managing information necessary for effective implementation.
  • Contributing to the implementation of approved work plans and ensuring timely delivery of programme outputs.
  • Supporting UNCT internal coordination mechanisms by assisting with the coordination of meetings, preparation of agendas and background documentation, recording minutes, maintaining action trackers, and following up on agreed action points.
  • Conducting research, data collection, and basic analysis to strengthen evidence-based planning and decision-making.
  • Supporting monitoring, reporting, and results tracking by maintaining activity trackers, compiling operational information, and assisting in the preparation of programme reports and analytical updates.
  • Organizing and maintaining programme documentation, operational records, electronic filing systems, and information repositories.
  • Assisting in stakeholder engagement and operational coordination by coordinating with government institutions, UN agencies, and implementing partners involved in protection programming and information management.
  • Providing general administrative support for programme operations, including meeting logistics, travel arrangements, records management, and document preparation.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Information and Data Management Associate position include a strong understanding of information management and data analysis principles, as well as experience in humanitarian protection programming. Candidates should possess excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Proficiency in data management software and tools is essential, along with strong communication skills to effectively engage with various stakeholders. Familiarity with the UN system and its operational frameworks is highly desirable, as is a commitment to the values and principles of the United Nations.

Educational Background:
Candidates for the Information and Data Management Associate position should have a relevant educational background, typically a degree in social sciences, information management, data science, or a related field. Experience:

Additional Notes:
The position is a volunteer role with a monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of R7,500.00 (tax-free) to support basic living expenses during the assignment.
