Job Overview: The position of Jardinero at CIMMYT is crucial for maintaining the green areas, gardens, trees, ornamental plants, and outdoor spaces of the campus at El Batán, Texcoco, Mexico, which is located just 45 minutes from Mexico City. The gardener is responsible for ensuring that these areas are kept in optimal condition, contributing to a safe, clean, and pleasant environment for both staff and visitors. The role involves manual and automatic irrigation, pruning, weeding, fertilization, pest and disease control, and the replacement of plants, trees, and grass as necessary. Additionally, the gardener will conduct rounds for the collection and proper management of waste across the campus, including recycling stations, and assist in cleaning avenues and common areas using a blower. This position requires a proactive approach to maintaining the aesthetic and functional quality of the campus's green spaces.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the Jardinero include: maintaining the green areas (ornamental plants, trees, and grass) through manual or automatic irrigation; conducting waste collection rounds across the campus using a truck and trailer; manually collecting trash from all containers, including recycling stations; removing birds that enter offices or common areas, as well as deceased animals within the campus; weeding and clearing the assigned green areas; applying fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides to gardens, trees, and ornamental plants as needed; performing general pruning and gathering leaves while replacing ornamental plants, trees, and grass when necessary; placing and removing flags; assisting in basic repairs of gardening machinery; maintaining the plants and pots in corridors as requested through tickets; keeping tools and equipment in good condition and reporting any failures to the immediate supervisor; detecting and preventing pests or diseases in plants and trees and informing the immediate supervisor; blowing leaves from main avenues and assigned areas; operating a pruning tractor for green areas; and supporting tasks and responsibilities inside and outside of their area as requested by their immediate supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet the following requirements: the position holder must have completed secondary education; a minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role is required; knowledge of cutting and pruning tools (manual scissors, brush cutter, trimmer, or hedge cutter) is essential; familiarity with the use and handling of blowers, chainsaws, machetes, sickles, pruning scissors, and manual or mechanical backpacks is necessary; knowledge and use of chemicals for burning and sealing edges is required; the ability to drive and preferably hold a type A license is necessary; the candidate must be responsible and possess a sense of order and cleanliness; the individual must be dynamic, service-oriented, and able to work in a team; and the position holder should have excellent manual skills, initiative, and responsibility.
