UN Women was established in July 2010 as part of the UN reform agenda to enhance the impact of gender equality and women's empowerment efforts. The organization merges the work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, namely DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW, and UNIFEM, which focused on gender equality. UN Women operates globally, with a mission to eliminate discrimination against women and girls, empower women, and achieve equality between women and men. It works in various countries, including Lebanon since 2015, addressing the economic and social needs of refugees and host communities in collaboration with the Government of Lebanon. UN Women leads and coordinates efforts within the UN system to ensure that commitments on gender equality translate into action worldwide, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.
Job Overview:
The Writer and Editor Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting UN Women Lebanon's growing portfolio of programs and partnerships. The consultant will be responsible for producing high-quality written content, including donor reports, strategic documents, advocacy materials, and knowledge products. This position requires a strategic thinker who can work independently and provide high-level technical expertise in developing and quality-assuring written products. The consultant will report directly to the Representative of UN Women Lebanon and collaborate closely with the Programme, Communications, and Operations teams. The role is home-based and will involve assignments based on an agreed workplan and evolving program needs, ensuring that the consultant can adapt to the dynamic requirements of the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will conduct research and draft, edit, and finalize a variety of high-quality written content, including press releases, articles, information sheets, brochures, newsletters, reports, surveys, analytical notes, briefing notes, and key messages. They will identify and develop storylines and content for media outreach and visibility initiatives, such as op-eds, policy papers, thematic briefs, and other communication products. Additionally, the consultant will write speeches for the UN Women Lebanon Representative, ensuring they are contextually appropriate and articulate the organization's position on various thematic issues. The consultant will also provide expert editorial review and quality assurance for program and corporate documents, ensuring compliance with UN Women standards and donor expectations. They will produce summaries, briefs, and synthesized versions of reports and studies to support dissemination and engagement with diverse audiences. Furthermore, the consultant will conceptualize, draft, and review additional written products and communication materials as requested by UN Women Lebanon to support program implementation, partnerships, advocacy, and visibility efforts.
Required Qualifications:
The position requires a Master's degree in Gender Studies, International Development, International Relations, Communications, Journalism, Public Policy, Human Rights, Social Sciences, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. The consultant must possess excellent strategic writing, editing, and quality assurance skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear and compelling communications products. They should have a strong understanding of donor reporting requirements and results-based management approaches, as well as in-depth knowledge of gender equality and women's rights issues. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, along with the ability to communicate sensitively across different focal points.
Educational Background:
A Master's degree in a relevant field such as Gender Studies, International Development, International Relations, Communications, Journalism, Public Policy, Human Rights, or Social Sciences is required for this position. Candidates with a first-level university degree and additional qualifying experience may also be considered. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of gender issues and the necessary communication strategies to address them effectively.
Experience:
Candidates must have at least 7 years of progressively responsible international experience in strategic communications, technical writing, editing, journalism, research, knowledge management, donor reporting, policy development, or related fields. Experience in developing high-quality reports, policy papers, strategic documents, and donor-facing products is essential. Additionally, candidates should have experience providing editorial oversight and quality assurance for complex technical documents. Familiarity with the United Nations system or other international organizations is desirable, as is a strong understanding of gender equality, women's empowerment, and human rights issues. Experience working in the Arab States region is also considered an asset.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Working knowledge of French and/or Arabic is desirable, as it will enhance communication with diverse stakeholders and contribute to the effectiveness of outreach efforts.
Additional Notes:
This consultancy is home-based and will be conducted under a retainer arrangement for one year. Assignments will be issued based on an agreed workplan and evolving program needs, with each assignment specifying the scope of work, timeline, number of working days, and expected outputs.
