UN Women is committed to supporting Afghan women and girls, particularly in the context of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, which is characterized by chronic poverty, climate change, and restrictions on women's rights. The organization employs a diverse team and operates in multiple countries, emphasizing the importance of gender equality in all its initiatives.

Job Overview:
The WCSO Programme Support Consultant will play a crucial role in supporting the Women’s Civil Society Organizations (WCSOs) Unit within UN Women. This position is designed to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of women-led civil society organizations in Afghanistan. The consultant will be responsible for coordinating civil society engagement, facilitating coalition building, and supporting grantmaking and programmatic processes. The role requires a deep understanding of the challenges faced by Afghan women and girls, as well as the ability to analyze trends and opportunities within the context of humanitarian response. The consultant will work closely with various stakeholders, including WCSO partners, to ensure a harmonized approach to engagement and support. This position is home-based, allowing for flexibility while ensuring that the consultant can effectively contribute to the objectives of the WCSO Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate Civil Society Engagement and Partnerships: The consultant will liaise with WCSO partners to identify common needs and challenges, facilitating a coordinated approach to engagement. This includes organizing consultations and meetings, documenting outcomes, and ensuring timely follow-up with stakeholders.
  • Facilitate Coalition Building and Knowledge Sharing: The consultant will support the planning of peer-to-peer exchange activities and knowledge-sharing sessions among WCSOs. This involves identifying learning needs, facilitating consultations, and moderating virtual sessions to ensure inclusive participation.
  • Support to Grantmaking and Programmatic Processes: The consultant will assist in the onboarding of partners, processing agreements, and managing project closures. This includes tracking applications, maintaining organized records, and supporting capacity development for partners on grant management.
  • Administrative Support: The consultant will prepare and maintain administrative documentation related to program implementation, providing general support to the team as needed.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess a strong understanding of program and grant management, with the ability to coordinate effectively with partners and stakeholders. Strong facilitation, communication, and reporting skills are essential, along with the capacity to identify needs and solutions. Organizational skills and gender sensitivity are also critical for this role.

Educational Background:
A Master’s degree or equivalent in social sciences, human rights, gender/women’s studies, international development, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A project/programme management certification (such as PMP®, PRINCE2®, or MSP®) would be an added advantage.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least two years of relevant work experience in international development, particularly in program implementation, grantmaking, and capacity building. Experience working with civil society organizations and knowledge of women’s issues are desirable, as is familiarity with the United Nations system.

Languages:
Fluency in Dari or Pashto and a working knowledge of English are required for this position. Proficiency in additional languages would be considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
This consultancy is home-based, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements. The position is focused on supporting the WCSO Unit's objectives and requires a commitment to UN Women’s values and competencies. Candidates will undergo rigorous reference and background checks, including verification of academic credentials and employment history. UN Women promotes diversity and inclusion in its workforce and adheres to a zero-tolerance policy on conduct incompatible with its aims and objectives.
