Job Overview: The Project Manager for Real Estate at the World Bank Group is responsible for overseeing significant components of facilities projects, which include the acquisition, design, and construction of the Bank's offices in the Africa region. This role is crucial in ensuring that the real estate assets align with the organization's mission of creating a world free of poverty on a livable planet. The Project Manager will report directly to the Manager of Real Estate and will work closely with various stakeholders, including internal business units, service providers, and external contractors. The position requires a proactive approach to project management, ensuring that all aspects of the work program are delivered efficiently and effectively. The Project Manager will also be involved in developing project programs, managing budgets and schedules, and ensuring compliance with the Bank's policies and standards throughout the project lifecycle.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Project Manager include, but are not limited to: delivering the work program under the direction of the Senior Project Manager; providing technical support for the design and construction of World Bank office premises; developing project programs in collaboration with clients; mobilizing necessary resources; supporting technical interactions regarding lease negotiations; reviewing lease proposals; setting project budgets and schedules; coordinating inputs from various Bank units and external firms; identifying and evaluating potential sites for suitability; managing implementation activities; supporting the selection of design and supervision consultants; preparing construction plans and contract documents; monitoring project budgets and schedules; ensuring timely project completion and occupancy; managing vendor invoicing and payments; preparing project reports; overseeing third-party reviews and testing; and maintaining accurate project documentation.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree, preferably in Architecture, Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, along with at least 5 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated project management experience is essential, and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2 are advantageous. A thorough understanding of building design and construction, including architectural design concepts and sustainability principles, is required. Familiarity with institutional interior design theory and corporate workplace standards is also beneficial. Experience with procurement processes and relevant experience in developing countries, particularly in Africa, is preferred. Additionally, experience working for international organizations is a plus.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Architecture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. This advanced degree should be complemented by substantial experience in project management and facilities management, particularly in the context of large-scale construction and renovation projects.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in project management, particularly in the real estate or facilities management sector. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing complex projects, demonstrating strong leadership and organizational skills. Experience working in developing countries, especially in Africa, is highly desirable, as is experience with international organizations and understanding of the unique challenges faced in these environments.
Languages: Proficiency in written and oral English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of French is considered an added advantage, particularly for projects in regions such as Kinshasa or Abidjan, where French is commonly used.
