Graphic Designer for Urban Policy Publications

Job Overview:
The position involves producing graphic design and layout for three key institutional publications related to urban policy in Guinea-Bissau. The publications include the Guinea-Bissau National Urbanisation Policy and the General Urban Plans for the cities of Buba and Gabu. Each Online Volunteer will be responsible for one publication, working independently under the technical supervision of UN-Habitat Guinea-Bissau. The role requires the ability to create visually appealing and accessible documents that align with UN-Habitat's visual identity guidelines. The successful candidate will contribute to strengthening urban governance and implementing the New Urban Agenda, particularly in relation to sustainable urban development and SDG 11, which focuses on inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Produce graphic design and layout for the assigned institutional publication, ensuring it is publication-ready.
• Work independently on the design process while maintaining regular communication with the technical team for guidance and feedback.
• Integrate all necessary elements, including text, tables, maps, photographs, diagrams, and cover elements, into a coherent layout.
• Ensure that the final design adheres to UN-Habitat's visual identity guidelines.
• Submit the final publication-ready file in an editable format (such as InDesign or Affinity Publisher) along with an exported PDF version suitable for print and web dissemination.
• Collaborate with the technical team to ensure that the design effectively communicates the objectives of the publications and supports urban governance efforts in Guinea-Bissau.

Required Qualifications:

• Proven experience in graphic design, particularly in creating publication layouts.
• Proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe InDesign, Affinity Publisher, or equivalent.
• Strong understanding of visual communication principles and the ability to create engaging and accessible designs.
• Familiarity with urban planning concepts and policies is an advantage.
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.

Educational Background:
A degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with relevant certifications or extensive experience in graphic design may also be considered.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in graphic design, with a focus on publication design. Experience working with international organizations or on urban development projects is a plus.

Languages:
Fluency in Portuguese is mandatory, as the publications will be produced in this language. Knowledge of English or other languages may be beneficial but is not required.

This position is for Online Volunteers, meaning it may be remote or flexible in terms of working hours. The contract duration is not specified, but the assignments are expected to be completed within a defined timeframe.
